Funny, that's what my parents said about the music I listened to 45 years ago.

My parents listened to a wide variety of music. My Father really liked the '60s and '70s pop music, and my Mother was a big fan of older Country & Western music. Being born in the early '30s they were also big fans of early rock-n-roll. We had a giant velvet Elvis painting at the end of the hallway in the house where I grew up, and my Mother cried like a little girl the day he died.

I remember one day I was in my bedroom trying to learn some Rush songs. When I looked up, my Father was standing in the doorway, and said, "That's just three guys, huh? Making all that music? They're pretty good. I might go to one of their concerts with you if there wasn't all that wacky weed smoking going on." He never did go to a Rush concert with me, but he seemed to appreciate the bands I listened to (Rush, Yes, Kansas, etc.), even if he didn't like the loud R-n-R stuff.

The one thing my parents did pass on to me was an appreciation of jazz standards. To this day (I'll be 52 next month), I am still a huge Frank Sinatra fan. Strangely, as a major fan of long-form progressive rock, I really love those short and to the point songs, and no one sang them like Frank.

My parents were more of the Benny Goodman era. Big band, that kind of thing.

In my mid 50's, and a fan of Greta Van Fleet -
but for the life of me, I dont understand the vocal direction on this song. I cant listen to it - it is IMVHO terrible.

Greta Van Fleet: When the Curtain Falls - YouTube

I'd say he's finding his way. Voice as an instrument? I just quoted you for context, this isn't aimed at you.

Lets say they get famous, who's gonna cover that song in the future? LOL Like Freddy Mercury, not many can tow the line with his vocals.

There are several artists that made me laugh the first time I heard them. Meaning, "What did I just listen to"?

The Police (I believe it was Walking On The Moon) (became my first favorite (current) band in middle school)

Garth Brooks (Friends in low places) I thought that was going to be a one off, funny song. I was kinda wrong. Own most of the albums.

John (Don't call me Cougar) Mellencamp. Their first music video "Hurts So Good" I had no idea what I just watched, looking back perhaps it was the video and his stage presence. I pointed and laughed. The next single fixed that and now I own most of his albums.

Eminem and Beastie Boys - No explanation necessary if you've heard them  I own the first 4 or 5 albums from both artist/bands.

I guess what I'm getting at is, when something unfamiliar drops, you might need to hear it and the rest of the album to get drawn in.

HA..Beastie Boys.

I do like his voice (GVF) very much - I think Highway Song is one of the best songs I have heard for quite a while.
The latest single just grates on my nerves - he pushes his voice to the point of screeching; not based on his range; to me it just has a very unpleasant timbre.

Ok. - I can listen to this national treasure unendingly - B. B. King : Greatest Hits Blues - The Best Of B. B. King Playlist 218 - YouTube

or this guy - Michael Burks-Make It Rain - YouTube

I'm one for four with your list. :D That's why there are so many different types of music.
One group who's success I could never understand was ""Boston." It seems like they wrote music for one song, and managed to get 3 (?) albums by moving the words around. And they weren't that good to begin with!

Funny, I have a Boston Pandora station.
