New truck #@$%@#&

A couple of points, don't buy new, get a 2 or 3 year old vehicle. Depreciation is mostly done by then, still a lot of life in truck and you can save a lot..... insanity is paying what these dealers want for the new trucks. Heck my f150 Cost me less than the discount offered on a lot of the new trucks and mine was loaded and has been driven over 110k miles since purchase with nothing over normal maintenance.

Buying new vehicles will insure you remain poor... unless you can pay cash for the truck.

Me too. Otherwise there wouldn稚 be enough used trucks for the rest of us. One reason why so many people buy new is it痴 easier to finance and more true on equipment.
Other reasons:
Those drivers residing in the rust belts do not have the option of operating a 15+ year old vehicle unless it has been oiled twice a year and had the salt washed out each spring. Even then the brake lines etc are stuck or rotten with corrosion .

And you can be positive it never got flooded (had a flooded vehicle, ran fine but was going to take $3K replacing hidden wiring stuff for it to pass inspection 2 years after the flood), and it's almost impossible to tell apart a vehicle that had only been flooded for a short time from one that has never been flooded.

Warranties are also important, especially with complex cars.

I appreciate all the people who buys the new trucks, if nobody ever buys new trucks then there won’t be a steady stream of trucks for the used market.

But the price of new trucks is still hard to wrap my head around.

I like fleet trucks, vinyl seats, rubber floors, radio, 4x4, manual locks and windows, A/C with good heat and I’m happy.

05 4x4, 6 speed, V10 new engine in 2012, 13,000 GVW, 165k miles, brake controller, coil front end, can tow 13,300lbs and I paid $4100 for it, cash money and no loans. A new version would be over 40k and is only available in automatic.

Just looked it up and according to Fords Tow Chart, the 2018 truck tows about the same as my 05.

2018 F350 Super cab, DRW, 6.2 v8, 4x4, 8ft bed.
3.73 gears it will tow 12,300lbs, GCWR 20,000lbs
4:30 gears it will tow 15,800lbs, GCWR 23,500lbs

My 05 is rated to tow 13,300lbs with 4:10 rear end and a GCWR of 20,500lbs, so the new gas trucks haven’t improved much, maybe the diesel trucks have. The automatic v10 truck was rated for 14,300lb towing and GCWR of 22,500lbs with 4:10 rear end.

Your truck with the new engine in 2012 and all manual should be a great truck for your needs for years to come. It is more like a tractor in my view.

New or used are both good options since we have different wants and needs to meet.

The 2010 F150 we picked up recently is our first full size PU. About 8 years ago we picked up a 1989 Ford F700 with a 16 foot flat dump for $2800. Funny both are solid white.

Since our needs are low I think the this F150 5.4L will work out for hauling our tractors from time to time since it is rated to tow up to 11,200 under the required guidelines. Due to my physical limitations I like ours Lariat 4x4 with tow package plus Max Tow features with six power windows since I like to run with windows down in the summer. Since our came with 205K miles and needing a windshield and some body work when all fixed up will cost us about 20% of the window sticker printed price. May or may not be a great value over time but the buy in was low with sales tax savings of about $3000 over buying a new 2010.

Now that I have everyone's attention!☺

Curious about other's opinion on trucks.
(I'm 65) I've had a truck except the last few years. I shouldn't have traded my '96 Chevy Cheyanne in about 2010...it had 36k miles, 350, manual, long bed, tow pkg. Otherwise "stripped" but how I ordered it. A farmer bought it within a few hours.
What I can't understand (don't want to make anyone mad)...but a truck should be a truck which you can't find much anymore.
I want 2 door, no carpet, a.c. is ok, vinyl bench seat.I don't even need radio.
Years ago all brands had their great models, and you could get full size or mini (4 cyl, fair mpg).
Around here every day you'll see one person driving a crew cab, tiny bed, all the frills, 4x4, tow pkg (never used), they're like $65-$80k. I can't understand. Why can't you buy a new stripped truck at a good price?

Go see the fleet manager at any large dealership.

I think that the gas and diesel trucks spec out the same: it's really chassis, axles and brakes that are the limitations.

Some vehicles are better used as early issues have been dealt with (usually under warranty): one can be spared having to deal with dealerships! Others are a bad idea if used: things are known to keep breaking and parts and labor are really high. Always a good idea to do research up-front.

U.S. auto debt stands around $1.2 trillion right now. It's crazy. I inherited my dad's 2003 Ram 2500 with the 5.9 Cummins. Right now it only has 123k miles and has always been garaged. I had to rebuild the transmission 1.5 years ago. That, a throttle position switch, both front wheel bearing and some transmission cooler lines and I am about $5500 into it. Still a bargain. I need a truck that can haul my stuff and if I had to get a new one right now, I don't know how I would bring myself to spend that kind of coin. So, I take my little commuter car to work most days and let the truck sit in the garage to keep the miles off of it.

OT: Goose hunting still good down there?

Nice truck BFJ! I'm a big fan of that 6 speed. Fun to drive. Make sure to keep clean oil in it.

Re: New truck #@$%@#&

I did the build a truck on the F150 also, 38k MSRP for a XL, 4x4, 3.5 ecoboost, 10 speed auto truck.

According to the tow chart the 4x4, supercab, F150, 8ft bed with the 3.5 eco boost engine, 3.73 rear end can tow 11,500lbs conventional and a GCWR of 17,100lbs

The 6.2, 4x4, F350 dually, Auto was 41k lol

The F150 is much lighter with the aluminum body and small engine so it payload would be maximized compared to a heavy superduty, but I bet the superduty will be much more stable with that load and won’t overheat the trans on long trips. I would assume they tested the eco boost in the superduty trucks, maybe they didn’t last idk.

The chart doesn’t show a 4:10 rear, on the axle chart it shows a electronic locking 4:10 rear is available.

The single cab, 8ft bed 2wd truck is the one with highest tow capacity. I would assume that truck with 4:10 rear would be around 13,300lbs.

In 3:73 the highest was 12,000lb conventional
For someone who plans to work it a lot the F350 would surely be a better truck. For those of us who only tow or need a big payload occasionally the lighter truck and 23+ mpg can suit our needs. Right now I can get by with my 2004 Ranger until the frame rots out, then I may buy a new truck to last me the next 15 years. As I said before, 20 years ago I would have bought the Dodge with a Cummins, 6-speed and pto hydraulic.

If you are just cruising around with a modern tall 4x4 as personal truck, not a big deal.

Working out of a truck all day/every day..... a high load height will get old pretty fast.....

Rgds, D.

I have an 02 Damx 4x4 dually and my 63 yo not tall wife is still able to get in. I don't think she would want to walk home. Some year I might put a step on it for her.

Lots of people will laugh but one of the best trucks I ever had was a 1982 VW Rabbit diesel. It was low on hp but enough torque. It got 45-50mpg highway, never gave trouble, few simple things like glow plugs, timing belt. I still have special tools I bought to adjust valve lash...shims. It handled well and was very low so easy to load stuff.
Of course light duty but great.

Had to have the frame repaired on my '06 Chevy Colorado last year after it failed inspection. I'm looking to replace it in a year or two. Chevy doesn't sell 4x4's w/manual trans anymore so I'm going to settle for a 4x2 w/manual. They run in right around $25k. Toyota still sells the 4x4 w/manual trans.
