Besides liking many of the bands already mentioned here....lately I revisited some old Dire Straits....in particular love the song Industrial Disease, so much so when I retired in Oct 2017 I included a link to that song in my good bye email to all the staff.

Probably my favourite song of their's was Telegraph Road.

Dire Straits - Telegraph Road [COMPLETE STUDIO VERSION] - YouTube

It might have made it big on AOR stations in the 70's, but it was way too long for mainstream radio in the era it was released.

I like pretty well all of their mainstream hits, but I consider Telegraph Road to be in a league of it's own....

Dire Straits was a band that dared to be different, just like Steeley Dan was a few years before them. I wonder if a new band today would be given the freedom to express themselves as much.

My two cents is that great music can be listened to over and over and over again without making you want to turn it off. Dire Straights has great music. I have a bunch of their albums queue up in the music player right now. I had not listened to them in a while and started listening again a few weeks ago. Just great music.

The Avett Brothers are the same. They worked with their father, who is a pretty good singer and musician, and their sister to put out a Gospel album that is really good. It is a shame the sister does not sing in The Avett Brothers since her voice is amazing and it blends in perfectly with her father and brothers. My personal PC has The Avett Brothers music queued up and I can just listen to it over and over and over. And I do.

There is good music out there, even on pop stations, not much, but some.:laughing::laughing: Ed Sheeran is making some interesting music/lyrics. I have seen him on ACL at least 3-4 times and it took at least two shows to figure out how all of that sound was from one guy. :D We were walking through Heathrow airport a few years ago and my wife swears she saw Sheeran right before he really went big. She said he noticed that she had recognized him so he turned away quickly. :D At least that is her story and she is sticking with it.:laughing::laughing: I was trying to figure out where the heck we were supposed to go so I did not see him. :D:D:D

I doubt it. That was probably the defining characteristic of '70s rock music; everyone had a unique sound and approach. I really miss that.

There are some very good and unique bands around these days, too. It's just not peddled to the public as much as it was back then. These days, they find a formula that works, then start pushing other artists who sound like that, too.

I don't think new bands can have freedom from the corporate directions to get on mainstream radio. On the other hand, radio is struggling and the main outlet for music listening is going towards the Internet where people have more choice. My kids don't listen to the radio. They stream their music and they listen to a wide variety of styles.

I have NEVER heard The Avett Brothers on the radio even though they are from NC. They were on ACL one night and I was reading on the computer. I heard the music and said, WT..., who are these guys. I stayed up until the wee hours of the morning, at least 0300, watching their music on YouTube. Started buying their albums that day and have ever since. Years ago a similar thing happened when one of the PBS Blue Grass shows was on and this young band came on stage. My parents where in town and we were talking but we stopped when we heard the music. Ended up buying every CD they made and of course they were not on any main stream radio station.

Thankfully, bands today have other ways to get out their music if they don't want to be follow a formula. I don't think it is easier but getting on the radio was never easy either.

Yep, any of those bands could play a song that was not even their own music and you would know immediately who it was.

Must be something wrong with me. Can’t stand Dire Straits.
It's a free country. You're allowed to listen to what you want and switch stations for the songs that you don't like.

It may be that you've just only heard a limited sample of their music. I used to not be much of a fan, based on always only hearing Sultans of Swing or Money for Nothing. Like with most bands, though, once you get off the popular carousel and dig into the deep album tracks, they are much better than what you hear on the radio every day. Dire Straits is a band of fantastic musicians writing unique sounding music. Mark Knopfler is one of those rare finger-style players, and he's really good at it.

... or ... maybe you have heard other stuff and just don't like them. Nothing wrong with that. There are quite a few bands that 99% of the population likes, and I simply can't stand. Everyone has different musical tastes.
