Is this a war on cash or a war on privacy? Or both?

It's both, George Orwell's 1984 is becoming truer every day and too many people not only accept it but welcome it.

What I really want to know is what the heck you can do in NYC that costs less than $100 anyway?

Lots of stuff, say eateries, and getting to them cost money. And tipping people is nice.

What's the big deal with showing ID?
"You even have to show ID when you buy groceries" - President Trump

I always show the WF card and ID when I go into any WF branch. No problem. Use them frequently, all over the place.

I was in Austin about two weeks ago in a hurry on the way to drop off some papers for a lease in Houston and realized that I had not gotten my signature notarized on one form. Pulled into a WF branch and in less than 15 minutes was in, notarized, and out back on the way to drop off. WF is extremely accommodating to me.

Only problem I ever had was at one branch several years ago where I had been working in a town and was cashing my expense drafts from the company I was working for at the time. The new teller wasn't going to let me cash one because I had signed it and it was also payable to me and the company did not have an account at WF. Pretty understandable that she would question that IMHO, since it was a little over $1000. So no problem at all, after a short conversation with the branch manager.

The service I have had from WF is excellent. All it takes is showing a WF card and ID? Absolutely I can do that.

Orwell just got the date wrong. He was off a couple of decades....

There was a report in the Wall Street Journal yesterday about Facebook asking banks for their customers financial data.:shocked::shocked::shocked: Some of the banks said no and pulled out of the discussions. Scary thing is that some banks seem to be still talking with Facebook even though they say they have privacy concerns. We really need a US GDPR and we needed it yesterday.

The US is too Orwellian as it is and it seems to be getting worse. We are not YET doing what China is implementing but there are signs the US will follow their lead.

There is a war on privacy. Privacy is being whittled away piece by piece from any different directions.

Later,
Dan

Snowflakes and millennials think they are cool when depositing cash into a hijacked or stolen account. The deposit slip shows the account summary and total. Then they come back and withdraw almost the full account balance. They are just so smart, greedy, socialist, pathetic and criminal. It's a sign of the times.

Yeah... Manafort is on trial for that right now...

This happened already fifteen or twenty years ago at the bank of Montreal in our small town. A now deceased friend entered the bank to be recognized and shot some sheit. Then when he announced what he had come for, the teller insisted he show some I.D. He thought that so peculiar!

Went to the bank recently (Wells Fargo.) Presented a completed deposit slip with my business name and account number. I was depositing cash receipts from that same business.

I heard: "Sir, I need to see your ID." What? My ID? To give you CASH?

I have deposited cash for many years. My business is very small so it is always under $10,000 per deposit. (I know going over $10k in cash triggers more regulations.) Apparently the new policy at Wells Fargo is that anyone depositing *any* amount of cash must now show ID. The teller said she wasn't sure but it might be a new federal regulation. I'm tempted to go in next time to deposit .01 cents and see if they enforce the policy.

I'm not sure what to make of this other than ... I don't like it! It's either a war on cash, war on privacy, or both????

ZZ's answer has been overlooked in this thread. But he hit on the real reason why it's necessary for Banks to ask for ID.

I welcome my banks asking for my ID and I would be more concerned in this day and age if they didn't.

Good examples of a bank saying "Don't come in to the branch".

Maybe they'd be happier if we just moved off-shore ?

Rgds, D.

And every time I go to a teller they always try to get me to use the ATM---
My main usual answer is that I want to protect their job.

Mainly they want to administer my funds and sell me some insurances.
No thank U, I have a professional financial consultant!---and I have stayed with the same insurers for 40 years, and that has paid dividends for me as I have had some claims* only to learn that it had no effect at all on my premiums or coverage, in fact they actually lowered my premium as I had recently re did my roof.

*one claim was $50K for water damage with renewal weeks away and they did not even adjust my premium one cent!

I think it is both. I use more cash now than I ever have. Maybe I am just being a rebel.
