Seems like we do not know if the tractor had a ROPS. Maybe it did not.

We also do not know if he was using his seat belt if it did have a ROPS.

MESSAGE to us should be to use what safety gear our tractors have, at all times.

ROPS in use = wear seat belt
ROPS not in use = do not wear seat belt

If your on a slick hill, put it in 4x4 and lock the diff. Some tires are slick on wet grass and they have zero traction sliding sideways. There should be more awareness and videos to educate tractor owners on these issues.

My friend actually survived a similar situation after doing what most would say everything wrong. He was driving his new BX in 2wd down a *steep* concrete drive with the bucket full of dirt, no ballast box, rops up, and no seatbelt. Naturally the rear of the tractor was light, began skidding, accelerated, raised up on the pivoting front axle, tipped over and slid down to the bottom. He said it happened in an instant and jumped away just before it rolled. The roll bar was completely bent over to below seat height.

that's insane, a rops should NEVER be compromised!. there's no sense in having one if it can't protect you!. something similar is used in race cars going over 200 MPH, and they don't fail..

News reports are notoriously inaccurate. It's not an accident investigation. People come to all kinds of conclusions!

A ROPS must have some kind of certification to represent some standard of safety. Otherwise, I'm sure off shore manufacturers would build them to look solid but out of soup can material.

I would have no problem welding onto a rops, and drilling enough holes into it to make it look like swiss cheese, I am sure it would still perform it's function, just no longer be certified.

We are not talking about a D10 for crying out loud! Some people just don't get stuff like that, clearly!

Since there is interest in the circumstances, I am submitting a FOIL request to the Undersheriff to obtain the report. I spoke to the Fire Chief but he was unable to comment.

If the details cause others to THINK before acting, something positive may arise from a tragedy. Will post the results. I am the OP.

ROPs is only Roll Over Protection, not a substantial higher speed crash cage.

Not only that, but most are rated for the mass of the base tractor. Mine is. Then you add 1,800 lbs of FEL and BH, and technically it's undersized.
