Unfortunately that page is just full of ads and no video. Too bad, I would have liked to watch it.

According to a survivor the captain released the top as the boat sank.

Read this horrifying account from a 15 year old girl....

Missouri duck boat survivor: canopy released last minute | The Kansas City Star

Per the article

When the boat started to sink, Keller said she thought it was “total and utter chaos.”

“Gillian said the captain was freaking out,” Keller said. “She said, ‘I was freaking out because he was freaking out.’”

What I'm curious about is what safety procedures are discussed prior to entering the water. As noted, the boat changed it's time table to hit the water tour first instead of the land tour. I don't think you could argue that someone within that company who ran the boat didn't know that a severe storm was on it's way. The sad reality is that no matter what questions are asked, it's not going to change what happened. One could argue that the storm that hit was a one in million chance for how quickly it moved and came upon the lake without warning. Added the fact that it appears the gentleman piloting the boat did survive, and I can only imagine the h e l l he is going through.

I do however believe that more federal regulations will now be in place with these duck boats pertaining to commercial trips.

It's rarely one factor that causes an accident but a series of unfortunate, factors or often blunders. You could regulate that industry to death and still have something happen.

Was watching stuff on Youtube about the employee (mechanic) that stole that turboprop plane in Washington State and killed himself. After all the (supposed) security put in place after 911!

Even pilots can't take a knife aboard. They might use it to take control of the plane.

The question becomes what regulations were in place to begin with?

One major screw up should require looking into, this situation had at least 2 major screw ups.

Someone gets a busted knee over a screw up, hey, crap happends and sometimes you have bad luck. Loose 17 lives out of 31 due primarily due to nature and man made decisions, and you can bet your bottom dollar that this is going to be going over with a fine tooth comb. Rightfully so IMO.

When the boat submerged, Keller said the canopy was on and the windows were sealed, but her ex-husband said the captain had a moment of clarity and was able to release the canopy of the boat.

They were all closed, Keller said her daughter told her. The windows were closed and the top was on. They were all stuck in there until that top came off.

Gillian is a strong, hard-headed young woman, Keller said. And she proved that when she had to get out of the boat. Keller said Gillian told her she thought she was going to die.

She said the thought popped in her head, I'm not dying today, and the top came off, and she said, It was so hard to get out of the boat, Mom. It was so hard to get out of the boat.

That is interesting. Sounds like the captain did not release early enough. When the DUCK was pulled out of the water, the side curtains or whatever you want to call them, were still down. From the photo, I could not tell if one could still get out, but even if they were just hanging, it would slow one getting out of the DUCK.

Another reason why I always have a razor knife in my pocket (unless I'm going someplace where I'm not allowed to have it such as a courthouse or Airport).

Going off topic but being prepared is part of my training. Going back to Cub and Boy Scouts. My trusty Leatherman tool rides on my hip most everywhere I go (on the ground). It is really frustrating not being permitted to carry a small pocket knife or tool when flying anymore. Took me several confiscated Swiss army knives at TSA before I finally remembered to leave those at home. Still pisses me off. And I'm still a bit puzzled how someone with a box knife held grown men at bay when it is do or die? That damm box knife changed my biz travel as I routinely brought tools aboard.

Yeah, I have missed my Swiss Army knife while traveling many a time. Last trip we checked baggage and I took my Swiss Army knife to Ireland. My understanding is I can't carry the knife with me out of the "house" because that is a law violation. Thankfully, I had the knife because I had to use it to work on a lock that was keeping locked in the house.:laughing::laughing::laughing:

I agree, but in that circumstance they were held at bay by deception. They said they had bombs on board and were hijacking the plane... which previously meant they wanted the plane to take them somewhere, and that was it. It wasn't until the people on the last plane heard by phone they were flying the planes into buildings, and then they came to fight. Methinks somebody trying to hijack a plane with a box cutter today isn't going to have the same luck.
