That proposition about credit card/coffee needs to be demonstrated, not stated. For instance, if I swipe it takes x amount of time of the cashier. If I give cash, it takes possibly 2-3x amount of time to count and handle the money (twice). During that time, the cashier could have served 1-3 people behind me. So that is also a cost. Which is greater is an empirical question, not an opinion.

I think TBN needs a new Forum entitled "My Rules for What Other People Should Do." That would declutter the experience-based discussions.

But when I pay by cash I always have my purchase amount counted out exactly.

Yea, i was behind "that" person in line the other day. Pulls out one bill at a time, then starts into the coin purse one coin at a time. Then has to go thru same routine handing it to cashier....

So, we've met? :)

I've gotten to where I rarely carry any cash at all. If I do, it's less than $50 or so.

Nice rationalization, not based on facts. It costs the merchant 1 1/2 to 3% per purchase. How credit card fees for merchants work | The Star
It's your opinion that it takes less time for a CC transaction; I have yet to see that happen. Computers aren't that fast to begin with but sometimes they are extra slow, people's cards don't work, they just feel like flirting with the cute store clerk,or they just can't decide what stupid scratchoff they want. OK, the latter two have nothing to do with what you're paying with.
A few years ago I was trying to get someplace but had to get gas using the company credit card. After filling I encountered a long line; that particular chain reboots their computers at 7:30 every morning when the main office opens, so everybody paying with a credit card including me had to cool our heels for 15 minutes until they were ready- and while I always carry enough cash to cover my own purchases, even when using a card, I didn't have enough to pay for 20 gallons of gas. Needless to say I don't stop there anymore.

What :fiery:me up is when I get behind someone with a long stretch of :bread::corn::spam::lemon::cookie::blueberry::hotdog::coffee::raspberry::pumpkin::beer::grapes::banana::chilipepper::bacon::egg::apple::cheese::drumstick::pizza::carrot:groceries and they stand there just oblivious until the clerk says they owe $122  and then they start reaching for their wallet or digging in their purse for it. Then they have to fumble around looking for their money. :muttering:

Our local bank does not have a ATM. There is one about 2.5 miles down the road, but the last three times I tried it, it was out of order. About eight more miles to find another one that might work.

Really?
Any intelligent person would have known it was a typo.

Perhaps that is why some company HR representatives are based in India. Looking for people with more intelligence. :confused3:

Seems as if some of the discussion has gotten around to how whether we chose (as consumers) to use real (employed) people to handle our transactions or replace them and use robots (automatic self-check out scanners etc...)

As more and more gets automated, this will become a bigger issue. As the question continues to become "Why do we need poor people?"
This is dangerous.

A competent person who doesn't rely on automation would proofread their post before submission.

I flat refuse to use those. I'll walk to the other end of the store or out to the Garden Center to use a human checkout. Or go to the Service Desk and raise a stink and have them do the checkout.
