The ceiling will be tongue and groove. On top of the OSB decking is 30lb roofing paper, and on top of that will be the R panels. Insulation crossed my mind, but I didn't think it would accomplish anything out on a porch. Should I rethink that?
I don't see the point. The more the structure can breathe the better IMO.

I've wondered this myself, would a bit of insulation substantially drop the temps on the porch in the summer? In my case it's a full width porch on the front of our house that gets sun most of the day. Nice setup Eddie.

Maybe a layer of something reflective but not so much for insulation. I would try and stop the heat transfer especially if the roofing is dark colored.

Agreed, light colored/reflective is a good idea but maybe too late?

Just to add to the insulate or not to insulate question. The porch faces East, so I get some morning sun, but there are a bunch of trees that block most of it. As soon as the sun passes my house and it becomes afternoon, and the heat of the day, the porch is in the shade of the house. It is significantly cooler under the porch then just under the shade of a tree.

for an exterior porch insulation is not going to do much for you.......if you wanted to cut down on heat build up in the attic area you could install an attic ventilator fan on a thermostat......I have found that dropping the temp in the attic makes a world of difference to the space below.......Jack

Don't know if they are popular down your way but what about water 'misters'? We don't get much heat in the PNW but I rimmed my gutters around our small deck with misters and it is wonderful for us on the rare hot days.

I would say only insulate if temps up there are high. I would go for good ventilation first.
