Yellow garden spider?

Over 50 years, and I can honestly say I've never seen one like this.

Assuming yellow garden spider?

My one boy has been loving him for photography, and my wife informed me he's calling "him" Bob LOL

We use to see them all the time in the gardens, they were mostly on tomato plants..

You are correct. Yellow Garden Spider. Not a danger to you, and very good at bug control! They are beautiful. We have them all over here in Dallas / Fort Worth area.

Years ago we used to have lots of them around our area every Summer. But I can't recall the last time I have seen one. They disappeared a long time ago.

Female black and yellow Argiope. The male will be about 1/5 her size and make his web in the outer part of her web. He then goes into her web and makes the verticle zig-zag pattern. I'm not far from you in Forsyth co and we see them occasionally.

Yep, it's a "Yellow Garden Spider"... argiope aurantia. An orb spider.

Your 'boy's' photography was so good that all I had to do was a Google Image Search on the second photo and all of the info, including what other names it's known by, came right up.

That was from my cell phone. Boys pics are actually nicer LOL

Just wanted to make certain I wasn't missing anything. I'm getting older, and surprised it's the first time I ever saw one at my age with the traveling I've done.

Also, a plus for "Bob", he looks cute enough that my wife doesn't want him gone:laughing:

We have several around the house in the flowers and shrubs. We feed them every year, and they can grow huge (we catch horseflies and grasshoppers and gently toss into the webs). Once they create their egg sack, they seem to disappear. Never knew they would bite.

They like garden plants and tall weeds to make their webs or even old farm machinery. I like hand feeding them a small grasshopper.

We get them too, they let a long strand of web out and the breeze will carry it several feet where will attaach itself, spider walkks across and weaves the web catching various insects overnight.
Before dawn most will reticulate the web but you either see the dew on the ones they don't or walk into them.
The spider is harmless to humans mostly, we call orb weavers and they come in an assortment of colours.
