Neighbors - Do you have control of your dogs? Time for a posse...

In the great white north, you are allowed to protect your livestock.

also the laws around dogs are very simple up here. My dog is not friendly to other dogs, so by default I have had to learn the rules. when my dog is "confined" to my property, and a stray animal comes to visit.... its not my problem. If my dog gets loose, and attacks another animal it is my problem. if I take my dog for a walk, I am responsible to keep my dog under control, however if a loose dog approaches us, and I try to prevent an altercation... then still not my problem.

I love dogs, but i would not hesitate to protect my livestock from a dog that repeatably terrorizes.

ask a few neighbors... tell them your story... if they cant be bothered to tie up they're dogs... then oh well.

When out side yes. When inside no of course not. She has climbed out of a yard with a 6 foot chain link fence so that is not an option. She is a flight risk and would not come back if let out without a restraint.

I'd much rather have a farm dog I could have out with me when working, but Molly is a rescue and our dog from a more suburban setting before we moved out to "the country".

EDIT" Also not on leash when we play in the 60x140 indoor riding arena because it is totally enclosed. She LOVES playing fetch....

20 years ago our neighbor had 2 large Doberman dogs kept in a secure fence and were no problem to us. Working in my shop saw a large Doberman dog looking into the building and assumed it was the neighbors dog. so shutoff the saw and called the dog which started to walk away saying lets go home and it would follow some steps then again tried to walk away . called the dog and kept it up until dog was at a walk in gate. opened the gate and dog refused to go through but kept the encouragement and finally it walked into the yard. slammed the gate shut and turned around and at corner of house came the 2 dogs normally there . the new Doberman ran to porch and stayed there all afternoon with these 2 dogs staying at foot of porch. Called neighbor about the situation and he came home and called the number on collar. Who was looking for his dog. That dog never came back to our place,

Our dog is inside 90+% of the time. Outside to do business or go for a walk or play fetch in the arena. She is a pet not a working dog.

There was a dog chasing my horses. I went into the pasture with three things... A dog biscuit, a leash and a pistol. The dog chose wisely, and animal control picked him up. The neighbor that owned him kept him fenced in after that. :2cents:

I used to have a mare that would go out of her way to kill dogs that wondered into her pasture. Ours or not! She has gone to the great beyond so now it's back to relying on a super hot fence!

When our daughters ride on the property often the 3 German Shepherds will run after them but not chase.
They don't go after the horses but will run amongst them while out of their compound, they don't go through the fence or chase cattle but people have told me they are aggressive when they have seen them following the horses.
The horses ignore them as they know them and there have not been any incidents.
Unfortunately there is a German Shepherd that chases cattle a mile or so from our place, it is not ours but we still get visits from the ranger after it has been reported.

My sister had a mare horse, that would kick a dog in the head if it got close enough. I saw it one time when i was at the paddock with her while she exercising the mare and her dog came in and ran along side and in a flash, the mare kicked out with her front foot, right in the face. Her dog stopped in it's tracks, some blood along the gum line but seemed to be otherwise ok. I assumed it was because the mare was more protective, because of the her new fowl, but later heard that it happened again, one time the dog died on the spot, the others ran off.

Have you considered an electric training collar? One of our rescue dogs was like that, and it only took a couple of corrections. He listens very well now.

We've been having issues with our neighbors dogs. They've been running loose and getting out of there fenced in back yard.

Other neighbors and I have repeatedly asked them to keep there dogs penned up.

The other night they rushed us when we were out walking our shepherds. Really freaked my wife out. Next morning they came over and tried attacking our dogs through the wire fence. Wife yelled at the dogs to get home. The big one (golden retriever/ peranese mix) started heading towards her growling.

At this point my wife's pretty freaked and ticked off. Goes back inside and gets her pistol. Dog was gone when she got back outside so she left for work.

Not 20 minutes later my neighbor sent me a video of the dogs going after my dogs through the fence again.

I talked to the neighbors and explained what was going on, and that we would both be carrying our guns from now on. And that they needed to keep there dogs up.

Not three hours later, the dogs bum rushed us again while we were out walking.

I sent the cops over to talk with the neighbors and explain the dog ordinances for the county to them, and what the fines were for a dog being unattended on someone else's property and being aggressive.

The threat of $500 fine per dog seemed to get the neighbor motivated about keeping there dogs on their property. So far, day 2 with the dogs put up
