Could be anything but it looks to me like the remains of a small hog ring. Anything on (or near) a Kubota that gets a crimped fastener?

Wow, something got in there.. almost looks like a staple from a box, but could be anything I suppose. It is hard enough that it dented both piston and head... have then given a estimate on how long before you get your tractor back?

Stuff like this is **** for process improvement folks. At least it is to me :D

 yeah the folks in QC will have a hot topic and be writing new procedures in no time.

Overall a good thing -since it may save another buyer headaches/stress and improve the infant mortality rate/customer satisfaction for Kubota.

I still figure that the mfr ran the engine a while before installing it in the tractor and heard nothing. Also since Arclight only ran it 60 seconds or so after the noise started. I'm still thinking that the offending clip/staple/piece of metal was lying there somewhere in the intake area closer the intake valves than the air filter and was ingested during the first 6 hours of operation. Maybe in the intake manifold, maybe in some of the air hose leading from the air filter to the intake, who knows. At least from the photos it doesn't look like a casting rim or fragment. Seems unlikely that it could have bounced around in there (say inside the combustion depression in the piston top) and then eventually bounced out on top of the flat part of the piston where there was no clearance. And it sure did not go through the air filter.

1200 times this thing was hammered into the head just in that time alone.

I think you're right though, intake manifold where the hose connects to it, or debris in the hose itself during assembly. Certainly behind the air filter and most likely over the hump under the hood, the air velocity has to be pretty low in there.

I have personally seen staples in both air filters and hoses. Not sure why.

Yeah, I never thought of that. Maybe it was in the folds of the filter, then worked its way in.

Maybe the staple held a parts number tag or could of fell off a air filter package who knows but I am sure they'll find out and change procedure so it doesn't happen again.

So, the tapping noise was it trying to staple itself?

Hate to be the person going through all those intakes and filters right about now..
