Why is the chain over the implement in one picture, and under it in the next picture?

I'm impressed you have a "residents only" burn pile. With a directional sign. :D

Wish my land was that flat. :)

Would there be any safety advantage to covering the chain with a piece of hose? or something? I worry about something giving way, and the chain hurtling toward the operator.

Yes, indubitably. Some cover chain under tension with a thick "moving van" blanket.

However as an alternative I buy Grade 70 chain, inspect it regularly and replace it after appearance of minor wear.

I should have noted that.

In Photo #2 a bow wave of sand built up in front of the stump.

In Photo #!, a different stump, I used the Cultipacker to tilt the bow of the stump to reduce the sand bow wave.

I towed at 1/2 mph in HST+ LOW/LOW with 4-WD engaged through the soft sand. Tractor could not tow faster.

my only question is why are you dragging the stumps instead of carrying them in the loader? or using the loader to roll them onto a pallet or something and carrying with the 3pt? I used a chain like that over a box blade while doing some pulling and broke the 3pt. Was a 1955 tractor though.....

not criticizing, just curious

The rear/center drawbar connects directly to the tractor chassis/frame. Rear/center drawbar is entirely segregated from the Three Point Hitch.

My Loader has a nominal lift capacity of 1,775 pounds. Those stumps were all over a ton each, probably 1-1/2 to two tons.

What!? replace chain for minor wear?

I replace individual broken LINKS. and any links that are stretched so tight they no longer swivel.(cut and weld)

Someone needs to wake up to the real world......

A log 6' long by 2' diameter even at an absurd 60#/cubic ft would only weigh 1150#, and from here it looks like at least the first stump is shorter than that and not as wide at the top, though it obviously spreads lower. How do you get 3000-4000# for that?

Isn't stump wood heavier? I recently had to roll (end over end) a stump that I'd plucked out with an 19k lb excavator- couldn't lift OR push it (along uneven ground). I might have been able to drag it but with the boom it was fairly easy to just roll it backwards (excavator going in reverse). My point is that while the length of the stump wasn't great the weight was pretty great (I think that this excavator is supposed to be able to lift 3k lbs): I've picked up huge tree trunks with it (as well as with my NX), but no way with this stump (or many others).

Operating weight of my L3560 is 5,400 pounds. When towing the stumps additional weight of mounted Cultipacker raised total tractor weight to 6,000 pounds. L3560 has half range steps on the HST and I was in HST/LOW/LOW and the tractor could barely move either stump through dry, soft sand. Absolutely max tows.
