How well would an infrared thermometer work for checking tires?

Had a TPMS with temp on a 3 axle toy hauler and had one tire running 10 or so degrees hotter then the rest on the same side with all at the same pressure and ended up that it was coming apart iternally and saved me from a blowout. Used an IR thermometer on tires, bearing hubs and differentials while traveling with good results.

Cupping is usually a combination of balance and shock absorber problems. Best advice would be to watch both front tires from another vehicle while going 55 --> 65 mph. If its a shock problem, your new tires will be cupping soon, too.

I have a FLIR brand IR camera attachment for my Android phone that's just wha t you want to see tires with. $250. Works with the phone's optical camera and operating system. Plugs into the USB and power port.

My TPMS for my TT & car trailer has a temp sensor along with the tire pressure. Nice things to know when on the road.

That's why I asked about the thermometer; it will achieve the same goals as your Android for a lot less money. The purpose isn't to diagnose the problem; merely determine the front end is out before trashing $500 worth of tires. (Which I should have noticed before they got to that point.)
