You may have a floating obstruction in the tank. I did....twice. Insect gets in the tank, floats around until it floats over the fuel outlet, shutting off fuel to just a dribble....not enough to allow the engine to run until it fills the filter bowl again....then it will start and run until the next time it floats over the outlet.

To check, next time engine stops and you see the filter bowl half full, pull the line off coming from the tank. Lot of flow....obstruction is not the problem. Little flow ? You have the above. Pull the line off the tank, stick a small screwdriver (or something) up in the tank outlet and you'll get hosed with fuel when you move the obstruction out of the way.

Cure is remove the tank, dump upside down, and blow it out. Second time, I bought a Rigid inspection camera (Home Depot) and stuck the lighted probe down in the tank after draining (tank still on tractor)....I could see a wasp in the tank right over the 1/4" outlet. Long 'grabber' tong tool reached it and removed.

I then added this to my tank: (which is what tanks OUGHT to come with to start with)

Cut the plastic nipple off the plastic tank....drilled a hole a bit small than the outside threads of this adapter, forced it into the hole cutting new threads. Screwed a 1/4" brass barb fitting in the internal part, connected line back to it. End of problem.

Thanks for that.
Any thoughts on how to remove tank?

Not on yours.....royal pain in the backside on mine, hence the inspection camera next time.....and the screen modification.

99 bucks at Home Depot:

Or $20 if you use a phone based one. Not recomending this one, just the first search result that turned up, there are a ton of alternatives. They have ones for iPhones too. I'd have gotten one, but have free access to an all in one unit (which has a way smaller screen & lower resolution than the worst smartphone out there).

If you do buy the mechanical pump suggested above, make certain to get the gasket also. It may not be included with the pump and purchased separately.

I ordered the pump and gasket. Do I simply unbolt the old one and replace it with the new one or is there something else to consider?

YES David.. simply unbolt the old one.. clean the gasket surface & reinstall the new one.. plug N play..
The old fuel lines are metric.. don't use SAE if at all possible.. & its not the end of the world if u do..
Your going to introduce AIR into the system once u open up/pull off the lines.. either to replace the lift pump or change the lines, so don't get discouraged when it wont start right up..
IF it were mine, once I got everything installed & tightened up.. I'd loosen the inlet line going INTO the inj. pump..
Spin the motor until I got a steady gush of fuel & no air & tighten it back up..
Put the throttle MID to FULL throttle & lite it off.. Pull the throttle back SLOWLY until it idles.. Good luck.
