Saturday night the wife and I along with our neighbors went out for dinner and a movie. When we came out of the movie there were several cop cars and an ambulance right in front of the theater. It seems several people were outside waiting for something (maybe a ride) when 4 guys in a white car zipped up, jumped out and mugged one of the girls and then drove off. She was knocked to the ground and knees were skinned up but otherwise appeared OK.
Crooks are getting very brave to do that right in the middle of town and in front of a well lit theater parking lot.

My neighbor and I both have CCW permits and just recently started carrying full time. We have had our permits for several years but just rarely carried. Now I carry when I go out-my neighbor puts his on when he gets up in the morning and keeps it on all day. I am not quite to that point yet but Saturday night made me a believer in CCW if out in town.

The biggest reason for not carrying full time was lack of a comfortable holster. I have about a dozen different types but none were really comfortable. Finally my neighbor found an elastic belly band type that is really comfortable and holds just about any pistol and all for only $20 with free shipping. I immediately ordered one for myself.

I am glad we were both armed Saturday night but also glad that we weren't targeted. I am sure we would have been involved in a shooting and glad we didn't have to go through that.

I am 78 years old, and live near a large Florida city.
My wife and I both have CCW permits, but do not always carry ...we should!
Old people are an easy target.

Glad there was only skinned up knees for the lady. Events like that can go south in a hurry.

I read a few newspapers from the island of Ireland. One of their big crime concerns is crime in rural areas. They are reducing the number of officers in the rural areas due to budget issues while there seems to be a rise in rural crime. Much of it violent. Home invasions against elderly people seems to occur somewhat frequently. While weapons are all but banned on the island, there have a couple of farmers that defended themselves with shot guns.

They have also had a couple of land disputes where a neighbor kills another. One murder was with pallet forks and the other was a shotgun.

A few months back I was watching an Irish TV show about building boats. The boat builder was at least in his 80's and living in a rural area. He was a bachelor farmer which is an expression I have long read but never heard actually used until watching and reading things about Ireland. Any who, the man had a brother, they both never married, and they lived together in their rural home. Unfortunately they were the victims of a home invasion and the brother was beaten severely. He had to have been in his late 70s and was likely older. He eventually died from the attack. The TV show was from a few years ago so this has been an ongoing issue on the Island. The surviving brother had been a builder of a style of wooden boat and the show was about a woman who persuaded him to build a boat for her and teach her how to build these boats. Was very interesting but shocking that this kind and gentle man could be attacked by a bunch of thugs in his rural home he had lived in all of his life. Just horrible. And you know that not much money could have been stolen because they never had much money. The thugs just beat the men to beat the men.:mad::mad:

Dan

There are plenty of "predators" every where you go. We aren't really "safe" out here in the rural areas, and never really were. You make your own safety.

Seems like it happens in Walmart here. Sunday, one of the teachers that my wife works with was attacked as she pulled into the parking lot of her duplex during the middle of the day. She fought him off and fortunately, was not raped, but he tried really hard before giving up. Video from Walmart showed him following her around inside the store, and then following her out the parking lot. Then have pictures of him and his truck and will hopefully catch him soon, but she never noticed him while she was there.

After hearing this at work, another teacher, at another Walmart, said that she was approached by a woman that wanted her to come out to the parking lot so she could talk to her about Jesus. She felt like this was very odd and she went and told security. Walmart security found the woman in a car out in the parking lot with three men that they questioned, but had to let go because they had not actually done anything yet. Then notified Tyler Police and where told that they have had reports of people being robbed by people doing something similar to this. I don't know what is happening with that case.

Last year one of the managers for Walmart was arrested after robbing people in the parking lot after work. From what I understand, her friends waited for her in the parking lot,and when she got off work, they targeted people that they thought had cash on them. They robbed a few people, one right after another, then took off in their cars. All of it was on video and she was caught the next day. I think four people where arrested.

We don't have very much crime here in Tyler, but it seems that when it happens, most of the time it's in a Walmart parking lot.
