Dangerous times even in small town

No matter what the law is in your state or region if you shoot somebody you should expect your life to change, and not for the better.
The NRA offers or offered insurance in case that does happen but I'm not sure that it's still available.
I have never given money to panhandlers. I make donations to the Salvation Army, Lutheran Charities and a few other organizations; not that I'm religious, but those groups tend to pass more of my money along to the people who I intend it to go to.

Local case here the other day. Female panhandle asked woman in car at stop light for moneiy. She hands over $10, male panhndler rushes the car reaches in and stabs her. She died. Spokane Washington.

Could you please provide a link to the news source. I looked, couldn't find anything without looking too hard, just sounds like the case in Baltimore and thinking you got them mixed up.

True, but usually the non-white-collar criminal element is poor.

So don't live near the poor.

In PA the avg house is $150k. Across the street from me is a fairly new 'hood - NOTHING under $400k. The 'low rent' district is 1/4 mile away - $90-120k, and you can tell driving thru there. The kids don't behave as well ( i drive a school bus..kids from there are the problem kids).

However, there are ethnically similar, but lower economic areas that are much worse. More vacant houses, more rentals/transient folks, more hiway/thru roads.

Hiways and hotels bring crime - town I used to live in was the one where all the airport area hotels sat...biggest problem? Human trafficking. Drugs (bigger deals as opposed to street deals) - easy transportation, lots of hotel rooms where anything and everything can go on. Lots of car break ins in the hotel lots.

Now in my quiet little town in the past month there was a bank robbery and a drug store hold up... and one of the not-so-good kids (age 13) and a couple of 17 year old friends went to the ghetto to 'sell drugs' (yeah, right) and ended up in a gun fight wiht the 2 17 year olds dead - the 13 yr old brought the gun...

So yeah, anything is possible. And I now tend to carry when I'm in the city - higher risk. Like when I weld I put the fire extinguisher very nearby instead of up on the wall where it usually is.
Or when I'm gonna take a trip I check the spare, all the fluids, tires, etc. Don't do that nearly as much fora 5 mile commute to work, thought when an issue arises it can be anytime anywhere
But you don't get to choose those who live near you.

We live in a quite area but a few years ago a family moved in. They have drug issues which has begat crime issues. At one point, they had a man living with them that attacked a neighbor and we had several B&E's in nearby houses. This guy was arrested. The guy owning the house has been arrested NUMEROUS times that I know about but they are low level, non violent crimes so he gets out. Guy is paranoid as all get out. Many BRIGHT flood lights surround the house. Gee, I wonder why...:confused3:

One choose where to live but that does not stop trouble moving to your hood.

Later,
Dan

Not sure how valid it was but there was a study a few years ago that concluded that concealed carry permit holders are just about as likely to commit crimes as police officers.

Actually, permit holders are about 70% LESS likely than law enforcement officers to commit crimes.

My rural friends out on the Key Peninsula have reported lots of problems... many are away at work during the day and homes spread just far enough for seclusion... sad, but no place is immune unless you have a compound or a big spread with people working for you...

In the city it almost seems safer these days than suburbia... a lot of criminal activity seems to be around the transit hubs or BART trains that now go to suburbia... people are mobile.

Here is a link when the California Speaker was carjacked... the crime spree paralyzed a boy during piano lessons plus multiple robberies... all from being approached while at a stop sign.

I was involved because I found the Speakers stolen car and other personal items... it was a big deal and just shows it doesn't matter who you are...

Why my point is to show that you avoided a confrontation at all costs, even in your own home. .

Sorry, If you make it inside my home which is 400 ft off the road, fenced and has a gated drive, You are screwed ! You had 400 feet before you reached my home to change your mind, turn around and go back over the fence.
I will not retreat ..

Just saw on the local news where someone took a woman's car.
As the thief drove away in the car. the woman fired shots into the car. She wasn't charged

You might reconsider using a handgun on a bear. I read a study (years ago) of 57 encounters between someone with a handgun vs. a bear. All 57 people were killed-- and the bear was often killed but not before doing in the human.

I carry "bear spray" when on the property while bears are roaming around. It is a close-in defense only, as it has limited range. But I would not hesitate to use it compared to being very leery of using a handgun ...

I’d take a handgun over a stick any day. A .380 might be pretty useless but I’m betting a 357 or 44 magnum will stop a bear pretty quick.
