Sorry, If you make it inside my home which is 400 ft off the road, fenced and has a gated drive, You are screwed ! You had 400 feet before you reached my home to change your mind, turn around and go back over the fence.
I will not retreat ..

Just saw on the local news where someone took a woman's car.
As the thief drove away in the car. the woman fired shots into the car. She wasn't charged

Ken

You never know, if someone makes it to your house, you may be screwed and not even know it. It is always easier for a defensive position than go after a threat, even in your own home.

I also saw on the news that a group of aliens have come down and infiltrated our government, and one of the aliens was caught infiltrating our miliitary who made mention about about it being easier to defend a posiiton.

The above is my polite way that when you bring up a recent news source, it's nice to actually link the news source.

Per the incident you mentioned, I can only assume that NO ONE was actually shot. If the woman did indeed fire shots into her car being stolen, she is also very lucky that no one else was hurt by a stray bullet.

I壇 take a handgun over a stick any day. A .380 might be pretty useless but I知 betting a 357 or 44 magnum will stop a bear pretty quick.

Nope....not nearly quick enough unless you make a lucky shot.

I have run with bear hunters using dogs. Most times the bear is treed, then shot with a rifle or shotgun at close range. SOP is when the bear falls out of tree, one of the guys runs up and puts 2-3 pistol rounds into the bears head. This year, two guys were injured by bears shot at close range with rifles. These are Black bears and none weighed over 200 lbs.

I would never hunt bears with a .357 or .44 Mag pistol....and I am a very good pistol shot. I carry pistol only as a back up.

But I agree with you on one thing....it is better than bear spray when the manure hits the ventilator.

Have to agree with Sigarms. I cannot imagine anyone stupid enough....and I mean really stupid....to fire at a vehicle driving away from them.

Some people watch way too much TV.

A lot more in many places in my county. I was county dispatch one night about 2am - no police (state or county) on duty. Guy calls reporting he is holding a juvenile at gun point he caught trying to steal gas. Response time on that full code was about 35 minutes. Time it was over, about 8am, we had 3 juvenile runaways that had stolen a car and several weapons from the county north of us.

I held a man at gunpoint inside of my dad's home for 40 minutes until the State Police about 3 years ago. The guy had gotten drunk, wrecked his car, walked past our house and up to my dad's house (he and his wife were out of state at the time). He kicked in the front door and passed out drunk in the mud room. The alarm company said the alarm went off at 11:14PM and I know the police didn't arrive til midnight, after both me and my wife had called them and told them that I was holding a burglar at gunpoint.

It's not that they're stupid enough, it's that they're pissed enough to do something without thinking.

THAT is where you get yourself in trouble...

Now, if a car jacker comes up to you with a gun and you shoot them first because you know your life is actually in danger, good shoot.

I used to believe the same thing. Then I read the study with actual case examples. Now I believe a handgun round will wound and enrage a bear to kill you in retaliation. Not really what I want to do.

I've encountered many black bears while deep in the woods. They have always seemed more afraid of me than me of them. Even if you encounter a bear with aggressive habits they are somewhat easy to distract. If I was holding a pistol and a can of bear spray, I'd holster the pistol and blast away with the bear spray-- if even needed at all.

I've often thought how tough it would be when confronted with different situations.
For example...the girl who was mugged, when do you pull the trigger if the perp is unarmed?
You hear a noise at night, see someone walking down your driveway carrying your television...sould you shoot the perp in the back?
Certainly if someone is breaking into my house I can't assume they're unarmed and I would shoot to kill.
There was one strange case a few years ago where an elderly man living alone was robbed. Things stolen from his home while he was away. He figured out who it was, a guy and girl neighbors. So he waited with his gun correctly assuming they would return which they did. When they broke in he shot and killed them both. He was then tried, convicted and sentenced of murder and is in prison still.
I support our second amendment 100%, but it gets really sticky knowing WHEN to pull the trigger.

I believe the guy was convicted because he waited three or four days after killing the intruders before calling the police. And they thought the girl lived for up to a half day before she died. This was on a TV show and it was a year or two ago when it aired so I may have some details wrong.

Amen to that.

Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't go HUNTING bears with even a .44magnum, but I sure as heck would not hesitate to cut down on one if I felt he was going to harm me. A key to shooting large tough animals with a handgun is having proper ammo. Buffalo Bore 300 grainers (solids) for the bruin would be far more effective than most hollow point ammo. You need penetration not expansion.

Careful staging that. Forensics files had a case were the perp was caught partially because the body had his hand clenched around the weapon. Death would have released the fingers. repositioning them around the weapon is "highly' suspicious.
Thanks for the tip!

The first day my daughter drove by herself after getting he license at 17, she went to Target. For years I've been teaching her about safety, stranger and how this is NOT a friendly world that all kids think it is. Sure I sounded like every "paranoid" Dad telling her about this or that when she gets out on her own.

Sure enough within an hour of her leaving she was on the phone to be crying. Apparently as she was leaving Target a lady approached her for a "ride" and she refused and the lady persisted. She looked over at her vehicle and there was a van parked next to it, so she turned around and went back inside ( like Dad taught her ). Turns out they were a team, the lady and the men inside the van as she saw them all drive off together. She said they were actual gypsies. I flew up there running every red light and breaking every speed law between the store and our house. She was hysterical, and wasn't able to drive si I drover her home and went with the wife later to pick up her car.

She has NEVER rolled her eyes once since that day as I continue to give her life lessons. Kids need to learn on their own as words mean nothing to them, and I'm not so sure I was any different.

Daughter, now 32, was a HS senior when she was approached at a gas station by a couple guys asking for directions. Said they were from Tennessee and she looked at their car and said why do you have Illinois plates. We are in KY. They started approaching her closer and she pulled the nozzle out of the car and pointed it at them. Told them she would soak them down with gasoline. They left cussing her. I appreciated her bravery but told her the next time to run inside the station.
