Dangerous times even in small town

I know a guy who is a long-time gun fanatic and a long-time braggart about what a great shot he is. You cannot have any meal, or do any social activity around him, where he doesn't steer the conversation back to guns, guns, and more guns.

His favorite saying was: "If someone breaks into my house, my biggest decision will be whether to put the .45acp round through his left kneecap or his right."

He went to Front Sight training in Pahrump, NV. After four days of shooting, I had dinner with him and asked what he learned. He said: "if anyone breaks into my house, I will retreat to a rear bedroom with my gun in hand, and call 9-1-1 for help.

I didn't believe him when he said that. I don't believe him now. But it was an example of the value of training-- even outside the range.

I would disagree with the kneecap. If you are going to shoot protecting your home, dead perps cannot tell "their" side of the story.

I was thinking the same thing. It seems to me the only reason to shoot someone is to kill them. Otherwise you open yourself up to a lawsuit.
If I hear glass breaking, someone breaking into my house in the middle of the night, I'm going to shoot to kill. I have to assume the perp will kill me or family.
Now, if I shoot wounding him, he's going to show in court, suit and tie, with an attorney, I'm sued for his permanently injured hand, leg, etc.
He pleads guilty to some story cooked up, he was drunk and at wrong house, or all he wanted was my $300 TV. He was unarmed.
Am I right?
By the way, interesting topic, good replies.

I may have talked about his in other threads but it's worth repeating here.

My wife, before she retired, worked in a Pharmacy. She had a LOT of prescription druggies in the store. She often commented about how it made her feel uncomfortable. She said, maybe I need to CC? I said can you shoot someone? She said I don't know. I said can you point a pistol in someone's face and pull the trigger until it clicks? She said no. I said you should not CC. It will only get you shot or pistol whipped with your own weapon.

So her and I understand each other. I know if there's trouble it's on me. She knows if there's trouble to get low.

Same here, again while I was on dispatch. homeowner heard a guy outside, saw him in homeowners truck, perp drives away, homeowner fires shots. Fall-out: Homeowner had just gotten his carry permit. No charges filed but the undersheriff gave him a very stern lecture about the law.

I would have said they tried to run me down with the truck. I fired in self defense !

The problem the way I see it, is if you own anything or have any money, and you go and shoot someone, you stand to loose a lot in legal fees defending yourself. Maybe, WAY, WAY more than anything a burglar might have taken from you.

WAY, WAY more than anything a burglar might have taken from you........unless it's your life. I'd rather be alive paying legal fees that laying in the groung debt free.

It really isnt sticky. You must know deadly force laws in your state if you intend to use deadly force. In this case, he knew why they were there (to take possessions). He could not prove his life was in any danger. If your life isnt in danger you really cant start shooting people in most states. This is likely why he is in prison.

First words out of your mouth after you kill someone is "I was in fear of my life", second thing you say is "I want a lawyer", then go silent.

I live pretty remote, at least remote enough a gun shot won't be heard. If it comes to it the next thing I would do is get out the back hoe and dig a deep hole drive their truck a nile away and torch it. That will save a lot of legal fees.

^^^^
That works unless you get caught. Then your "self defense" argument goes out the window. Another question, to you or anyone else who carries for self defense; do you believe that you could sleep easily knowing that you killed somebody, even though it was you or him?

I believe the guy was convicted because he waited three or four days after killing the intruders before calling the police. And they thought the girl lived for up to a half day before she died. This was on a TV show and it was a year or two ago when it aired so I may have some details wrong.

RSKY

There was quite a discussion when that happened on the "Front Porch" back when it was an open forum. I never did hear the outcome until now.
I believe that he shot them on Thanksgiving Day and waited until Sunday or Monday, because "He didn't want to ruin anybody's holiday."
What an amazing story!
And "SO I guess you best put a kitchen knife in their hands after you shoot them! LOL" ...my luck in all the excitement I would grab a butter knife.
I was thinking about all this mugging stuff when today wife and I had lunch out. Of course wife has me stop at a dollar store on the way home...I wait in the car.
Soon this lady carrying a bag walks over, opens my door and sits in my lap!
Poor thing...her car was nearby, same type and color. She was so embarrassed...I told her that was ok, stay put and we'll chat until wife comes back.
No...I never thought about shooting her, it was funny as could be.
My BIL tells of helping a woman a parking lot intrying to get into her car because her key stopped working. After trying for a few minutes some big guy comes out of the store and says "What are you doing to my car!!!!!". Supposedly she looked over two lanes and said "OH my God, that's MY car over there!!!" and left him to do the explaining.

I asked my wife pretty much the same question before I bought her a weapon to carry.
