Dangerous times even in small town

I don’t recall saying anything about “laying in wait”. My point was that even when the criminal statute might provide that you can use deadly force to protect property from theft, criminal mischief, etc it still may not be a good idea to do so.

You were answerign a post discussing setting a trap and laying in wait.

We don’t consider ourselves to be “victims” of crime but over the last 40 years our primary residence was burglarized once, several thefts from the Farm, rentals broken into and tools/materials stolen a couple times, vehicles burglarized away from home twice, at home or secondary home twice but nothing of any real significance stolen although the feeling of “violation “ did linger for awhile. In at least 4 cases we were relatively close by when the acts occurred. I’m glad we never occasioned to surprise the thieves in the act because things might not have turned out well.

My wife actually solved one of the vehicle burglaries, which was only one part of a larger criminal episode. She is a better detective than I’ve ever been. After her work resulted in the arrest of the crook she pursued restitution through the DA’s office and successfully obtained a civil money judgement against the thief.

I hope she collects, ny neighbor did...sort of. We are in the country on a well ltraveled highway. Here house is several hundred yards up a narrow driveway. New truck (a few months old) with a full load of professional plumbing tools stolen from right under a fully lit yeard light in the middle of the night. She also got a judgement, says she occasionally gets another check of around $100.

I do not have a yardlight and consider them nothing but invitation for crooks to see what they are doing. In her case, had the light not been lit, the juveniles wouidn't even have known there was a house there.

Never underestimate a determined woman.

My wife did get the restitution checks but she had to go back and have an adjustment made because the prosecutor forgot to include sales tax on the value of the items reported. They also reduced the value to depreciated value and would not include things like Time to replace the items, make list for the court, appear to testify, etc. I forgot all exactly what was added in.

She has done pretty well collecting on small claims court judgements in the past. On one the interest exceeded the original judgement amount. She refused to take any less than the full amount including all the post judgement interest and fees. The deadbeat finally paid up. They were very surprised when the Constable showed up at their door.

Yeah, that's one of the reasons we need reciprocal carry laws. NJ just passed that ANY magazine over 10 rounds is a FELONY - and who know what their carry laws are....one accidental turn and get pulled over or sobriety checkpoint or a minor fender bender and you get a felony charge and lose your guns...

Many stories of similar things happening so it's not at all a remote possibility.

It wasn't agasint the law for me to be in Camden New Jersey at 0100 by taking a wrong bridge out of Philly, but common sense told me that a white boy driving a VW in Camden at night should turn around ASAP and get the heck out of dodge. I came to this conclusion by only looking at the area I was driving in.

The key word is common sense.

In my driveway around my house, doors to car would be unlocked. Given my driveway and house being off the road, I even leave my keys in the ignition running at times. However, common sense tells me NEVER to leave the keys in the ingition without myself in the car, law or no law outside my home. That same common sense would tell me if I lived in a more surbuban area, not to leave the keys in my car even in front of my house.

Jersey, Mass, NY, Maryland and California could all disapear first for all I care when it comes to gun laws.

I will even take the time to to spend 15 minute to unload and carry "legally" when driving through Maryland for the 10 minute drive through that **** state on I-81 going to Pa from NC.

Enjoy the I-81 drive through Va while you can. You may soon be taking that 15 minute break at the VA/NC line.
I doubt we will ever see another 2A friendly Governor, and next year I fully expect to see the two state legislative bodies go blue.

When I moved in I took down the yard light, put a sensor light.

Neigbor asked why I took down the yard light...

Sensor light COULD be a dumb motion sensor..or it COULD be me turning on the light cause I heard you...

Don't get caught with hollow points either. The fine is a horrendous amount per round.

Later,
