I should qualify that I live on a gravel road and that slurry plays helll with the disk brakes. That and the Evil brine they use on the winter roads. TOTAL misapplication!

Plus the cost of that additional E-brake on the rears is just stupid and expensive. Why don't they put a drum brake on the output shaft of the transfer case as on some heavy equipment for E-Brake purposes? It's cheap, simple and away from the harsh environment. Maybe I just answered my own question.

My 3500hd has one of those. My 3500 doesn’t. The HD has 4 wheel disk vs front only disk on the 3500. IMG_0885.JPG

People cite the performance of disk over drum. But what kind of performance do you get from quickly buggered up disk brakes?

I remember when Chevrolet Trucks first had disc brakes and the manufacturer added a sticker that said caution disc brakes... I thought it was because they stopped faster but never occurred it had anything to do with winter driving... circa 1970.

Also had a Honda CB 175 for my first bike.

I remember going on a trip with neighbors in the early 70s with their brand new Impala. We had only gone a hundred yards when she just about put everyone through the windshield. I will never forget how her husband commented on how many miles she just took off the new tires!

I'm guessing the Disk Brake Warning was about this kind of thing.

@ mykleh,
That series Avalon was one of the best cars ever made. I replaced my 300D Mercedes with a 2001 Avalon, bought at 123K and regretfully sold it to my BIL when was down on his luck, and he ended up totalling it at about 230K.

Before I sold it i resealed the valve covers, replaced the timing belt and water pump and all 4 struts. It could have run another 100K easily. The engine, called a sludge maker by many, was spotless inside when I sold it.

We have a gently used LS430 now but I still miss that Avalon.

I have a 2016 Avalon which I hope will be as good as yours. It serves as daily commuter for my wife and I covering 100 miles a day. It’s 270hp V6 and long wheelbase makes it very smooth, powerful, comfortable, reliable, and still gets 30mpg highway.

My wife has a 2001 Avalon with just over 306k miles. She wants to keep it until 2021 and it's 20 years old and then get a Suburu SUV. It's been a very reliable car.

My '85 Nissan Pickup lasted until 350K until I gave it away; I have no idea how many miles or how long it lasted with the new owner(s).

My 92 Nissan Pathfinder has over 315k miles. Too cheap to sell; I'm gonna run it until it dies.

My Volvo is at 487.000km which is just over 300.000k miles on its original clutch. No rust. I might apply a layer of underbody coating on certain parts to make sure i wont have any welding to do in the next 10 years. Most expensive part i replaced in the past 140.000km was a wheel hub unit of 170 euro, the post 1998 models had hub units instead of replaceable bearings which are quite more expensive.

Given the condition of the vehicle, and the quality of todays vehicles, i intend to drive it till 800.000km or 500.000 miles. That includes regular towing of 10k combined.

I’ve never seen a semi without drum brakes and they obviously work pretty well. A pickup has drum brakes and they apparently suck. I’ve never had a pickup with 4 wheel drum brakes.

My first truck did...a 1970 International. Rugged truck, was rated ½ ton, but with the dual rear springs I bet it was closer to ¾. You could pull stumps with that thing, but it's not something you wanted to take on the highway for any distance. My tractor rides better. Can't really comment how the brakes were...didn't think they were bad at the time (though the rears tended to lock up easily with nothing in the back), but since all I'd ever driven were 4-wheel drum vehicles didn't have anything to compare to.

Curiously, how do the big rigs keep the drums dry? One large puddle and drum brakes were pretty useless on any car I had with them.

I remember when Chevrolet Trucks first had disc brakes and the manufacturer added a sticker that said caution disc brakes... I thought it was because they stopped faster but never occurred it had anything to do with winter driving... circa 1970.

Also had a Honda CB 175 for my first bike.

Don't specifically remember any difficulties adjusting to disc brakes, but I remember as a teen when my parents got their first car with power brakes. First stop I almost put everybody thru the windshield.

I had a CB-360 back in the 70s. Thought it was kind of a mediocre bike...electric start worked when it worked, engine had quite a vibration at highway speeds and between the cement seat and the uncomfortable riding position it sure wasn't something you wanted to take on a very long trip (more than an hour or two). Kept it a couple years and traded it in for a Yamaha & never looked back.

Had a Ford '74 "Supervan". The original 302 lasted 475,000 miles. The replacement motor added another 100,000, when I sold it. I was doing delivery at the time. I had replaced every thing, but the frame. :)
