I had a 1982 Subaru Wagon that had 285,000 on it when I had to retire it. Nothing mechanical, just some kids broke the windows out and the glass was more than the car was worth.

Subarus that vintage were tough cars. A cousin- who's one of those guys born with a horseshoe up his butt anyways- bought an early '80s Subaru when he got out of school. It was a year old when the car got hit in a major hailstorm; it looked like somebody took a ball peen hammer and beat all of the sheet metal. The estimate to fix it was almost the value of the car; so he had them total it, paid it off and ran the car into the ground which took a long, long time.

But when you can buy 100k mile truck for under $5k, why keep a high mileage unit?

.

Maybe for a 2wd half ton. You better bring double that for a 3/4-1 ton gasser and 3 or more times that for a diesel.

I bet that hail damaged Suburu never got as much as a parking lot scratch, dent or bird droppings!

1984 Mercedes 300 turbodiesel. I bought it at 213K in 2002, and it went to 385k when I unloaded it 7 years later, but only for cosmetic reasons.
It had a replacement automatic tranny Installed under warranty at 79k. I never changed the fluid all the time I owned it and it shifted like a dream right up to the day I got rid of it. Lowest cost per mile of any car I ever owned.

My brother bought a 1978 Toyota pickup brand new and he ran it to 525K and he still has it.
The engine is like Grandpa's hammer..

2003 Impala w/3.4 V6. has >332,000 right now. I had to put a new tranny in it at 150K, and new intake gaskets, and replace the camshaft and lifters at 285,000 It runs great, but it has something going wrong in the driveline. It slips and clunks when turning hard left. The AC is in need of a new line with the filter tube orifice in it.

I forgot to say it has the original bottom end and heads. I did have to put the thread inserts in the aluminum heads to improve the stock valve spring/rocker arm retention bolts.

I used Mobil 1 15,000 mile oil and that's how many highway miles I drove before I changed it. (I did have to replace the cam and lifters at 285K)

We've had 2 Honda Accords. One was a '97 my wife bought new. That car was hit so many times it was unbelievable. I figured up at one point it had about $30k worth of body work done to it. It was still running like a champ at 252k miles when I hit a deer about 2 weeks after dropping full coverage insurance. I decided not to fix it. It ran and drove great other than you had to change the tranny fluid every other oil change or it wouldn't shift right, ran it for 160k miles like that. No mechanical work ever done to it other than timing belts, water pump, and radiator. Traded it to my buddy that runs a body shop and a junk yard for a 2000 Honda Accord with a salvage title and 71k miles. Sold it at 315k miles because of looks and little things were starting to add up on it. At 220k had to put a transmission in it. Had my buddy put a junk yard tranny in it that had 120k in for about $1000 including the transmission. Last thing we did that tipped it to sale was the distributor broke and wouldn't let it start and had to have it towed. My buddy but a used one in it for $75 and I drove it another 2k miles when my next car was ready and I sold it.

I'm not one to keep cars.. They are typically showing rust and wear up here in just a few years. If it's a truck that is on the road when it's snowing and they are in the salt/mag... you can hear them rotting out from under you. My turnover rate is about 2 years or sometime just before the factory warranty is up. A couple years ago I bought a 1999 F150 4x4 lariat extra cab from my friend in Fla. he was the original owner and it had spent its entire life in South Fla.... zero rust anywhere. I paid him $2,000 for it with 150k miles. I'm now into this thing for more than 12k after fixing everything that needed attention. It's a solid, good looking and running grocery getter now with 170k miles. If I tried to trade it, I would likely be offered 2500.00 for it... I'm not going to do it.. I'm going to get 300k miles on it...if it kills me.
