YEs, if one just has to have a yard light, the sensor type is the way to go. A steady light will not scare off a burglar but one suddently coming on will!

I think you could increase the effectiveness even more if it turned on a light inside the house and waited 30 seconds and then turned on the outside light.

Terminal ballistics of true hollow points are not favorable. You should switch to bonded bullets. They have the best of both. Good expansion and great energy dump on impact.

That's what I'm using. The ones I have at the moment are Hornady critical defense round. They are nylon tipped hollow points designed for expansion and energy dump. Was really impressed with them when I popped a skunk by the back sunroom. Only real world test I've used them on.

But compared to the 22 mag pistol I popped one with a couple years before in the same spot, I feel better using the critical defense round around the house even though it's substantial over kill for a varmint. The 22 mag passed through and put a silver dollar sized divot in the slab for the house. Which brought up my concern for a ricochet. The critical defense rounds didn't pass through.

That is horrible performance...could not penetrate through a skunk!!!! So about 4" of penetration?

I want at least 8" of penetration and preferably 12". Your assailant could be wearing a heavy coat and although energy dump is good it is not the whole story. You need to reach the vital organs. But use what you think is best for your situation....others should consider what is best for them.

A pretty good read which I couldn't say any better than myself...

Can a .22 LR caliber bullet penetrate a human skull? - Quora

I'll need to check, but I believe some farmers around here still use the .22LR for cows on slaughter day.

I will never forget an article in the 80s. It claimed that more people get shot with a .22 than any other round AND most die within 48 hours. That little round goes wizzing around inside you willy nilly doing all kinds of damage!

Or flipped on the outside light and then fired a crow cannon.

From the article: "We used .22 LR to kill 400lb hogs on butchering day. One shot in the center of the forehead and down they dropped, with nothing but a grunt and muscle spasms. You had to climb in the pen and grab the hind legs as they spasmed and kicked so they would not bruise up the hams."

I've shot many feral hogs in the trap using a .22 and shot them right in the ear. They never spasmed, kicked or even squealed, just fell over dead.

For sure! I wish they were building them.

I offered to tape my dog barking and use that at my mother's house for the doorbell. To make it more realistic you could even put out a few of those fake dog piles that they used to sell in novelty shops.

Actually when they were having problems in the neighborhood I wanted to leave him with her, but she declined. He wouldn't know to bite anyone but has a rather fierce bark, enough to make you think twice about entering the house.
