We all know the legacy of the Ford Pinto with it's exploding gas tank. Yet how often do you see somebody carrying a gasoline can or propane tank on one of those receiver hitch carriers? Talk about no protection; I cringe every time I see one especially since they generally are held on with an el cheapo tie down strap, the type of which I have never bought because I can find all that I need on the side of the road.
I am not 100% but I think the difference there is in a pinto the fuel gets all the occupants and the receiver hitch thing it gets all over the outside of your car.

Also if they don't own a pickup where are they to transport the fuel - in the passenger compartment? I personally would rather have it outside on the hitch in that case.

Last summer, couple of older ladies were filling 2 5 gal. plastic gas jugs in the back of their Ford Explorer. With my best concerned look, I told them that was very dangerous. Their reply: "it's okay, they are in black garbage bags". I walked away.

My first new car was a '70 Maverick with a 6 banger. It was supposed to be Boss 302 Mustang. Never quite forgave my Father for that one since I was the one paying for it. Two months later, I drove from Alaska to New Mexico and installed a High Performance 289. I was 17. I finally sold that car in 1999 and it was still beautiful.
The Mavericks came with a 302 as an option, too bad he did not get you one of those. In hindsight, he was probably trying to make sure you did not wrap your first car around a telephone pole. :D

Exactly what he was thinking. I was still fairly bent.

In that generation of small low priced Fords I liked the Maverick better. At least it had a V8.

My brother had a 75 with the 302 and the 3 on the tree. If you wound it up a little and popped the clutch it would pull the front tires off the ground.

Driving in the center lane on the interstate yesterday I saw a semi about a car length behind the last car in a train of six cars in the center lane. This at 75mph with lots of room to go around. Thought it might have been a short time traffic congestion thing but he tailgated for maybe ten miles before he broke away.

Then, a few minutes later I see him a car length behind another car and same speed or faster. He knew what he was doing because he moved over when a cop passed going the other direction. Then he was right back to tailgating. We followed him for 35 miles. What the...?

None of you should have been in that lane.
Drive in the RIGHT (aka correct) lane unless you are passing.
If passing, DO IT & get back in the right lane.
