I've had many different types of fish in my lake. Trout, salmon, bass, gold fish. The gold fish were eliminated with Toxaphene. My dad was a fish biologist with the Game Dept and, fortunately, had access to the product. Salmonids( trout & salmon will not reproduce in a lake - they need a stream to lay eggs). However, for 50 years we leased the property to two Dr's who would keep the lake stocked with trout. They grew to monstrous sizes.
Now - it's bass. They do reproduce in lakes. Besides - to keep the lake stocked with trout is more than I want to spend. There is no longer a local private hatchery where trout can be purchased. Now, there is a lot of paperwork & approvals plus finding a hatchery and arranging transportation.
About every three to five years I perform a "stock reduction program". The population of bass can get so large - the bass begin to "stunt". String out my 100' monofilament gill net and provide a bonanza for local wildlife. Even though, I would imagine, the coyotes seldom encounter a bass - they dig right in. It's a free for all - hawks, eagles, raccoons, coyotes, ravens, crows et al. Normally I will make three "sets". The total haul will be gone in about 4-5 days.
Years ago we used some of the bass as fertilizer around the wife's rose bushes. Mistake, the coons would dig them up and seriously damaged several rose bushes.
