In todays world we rely on the cash register to tell us what the change is, dumbing us down. Same with remembering phone numbers because our cell phone has them programmed in.

When I first started checking groceries, on a very busy day, a lady returned to my check stand and told me she had not paid me. I said "impossible", but she insisted, so I told her to leave me her name and telephone number. When we totaled my my register that night, it was short exactly the amount of her bill. Turns out when it came time to pay, she handed me a hand full of coupons, which I counted and paid her for. I guess mentally I accepted the coupons as if they were her money, slammed the drawer and went on.

Back in the dark ages, i was running a cash register at electronics repair shop. I was very close to the local college, so students and instructors would stop by to pick of floppy disks. Remember those? :laughing:
Teacher walks in and picks up some disks and i rang her up and counted out the change back to her, like Jstpssng discribes. She noticed the cash register and said the it was wrong, as the register showed different amount for the change. I acknowledged the discrepancy and told her it was broken and i was testing it out for a friend. She said she was pretty surprised that a "young" person would know how to count change correctly. I told her that when was very young, i had walked into town and bought a small toy and the clerk there, took the time to explain what she was doing in counting out the change. She told me it is easier to add than to subtract, to figure the change.

If you really want to confuse somebody try giving a larger bill but with the exact change. I.E., charge amount is 14.53 so you give them 20.53 expecting $6.00 back.
Hand a clerk some money and say all you have to pay with are some New Mexican dollars. Tell us how they react.

I do that all the time.
Luckily most cash registers are set up to punch in how much the customer gives them so that it can calculate and tell them the change is $6.00!
The hard part is handing them the 53 cents before they punch in $20.00 because they have no clue why you would also be handing them 53 cents when $20 covers it.

My first job was at McDonalds....I was always big for my age...I lied...said I was 15 when I was actually 13. Back then...they didn't check. First day on the job...manager asked..."Can you count?"....I said yes....he put me on the register without any real training. The register had buttons for each food item...my third customer comes in and orders a cheeseburger but doesn't want any ketchup on it....I looked at this customer and said...."Are you kidding...this is McDonald's...they come with ketchup....you can't order one without ketchup"....the lady got all huffy...manager came over....I explained the situation...he special ordered her chesseburger without ketchup...I got moved to fries....truth be told...there was no button for a cheeseburger without ketchup on the register...I worked at McDonald's only 18 hours before my brother got me a stock boy job at a store he was working at....talk about pressure....lucky I became the stable adult I did after that experience. :laughing:

When paying cash I often ask if they still accept this while handing over a note, you young ones don't get it, the older ones appreciate the humour.

I always bugger up the whole system at MacDonalds by asking that they not put a lid on my Big Breakfast. It's a crime how much garbage is produced by that little breakfast. I don't need a lid to go from the counter to the table!
Apparently the MacDonalds that had various holes for different refuse, then proceeded to throw everything out in one container anyways. Nothing like fooling the gullible public.
