So I got my son a go kart for Christmas and it is plenty fast enough on flat land. Problem is we don’t have much flat land. You have to traverse a hill to get to the area I’ve made into a track of sorts. My son can make it about halfway up before it will no longer turn the tires. I’ve adjusted everything except for the governor. There are no adjustment screws for it just the spring on the linkage. This thing at WOT sounds like 2k rpms to me. We need to get it up to at least 3k. What options do I have? I don’t want to completely remove the governor or completely bypass it by putting a solid wire from throttle lever to the carb. Would shortening the spring stiffen it enough to provide for more rpm? Go kart is a Coleman ck100s with 98cc motor.

I know I can't help you on this one. You need folks dealing with small engines. I find this site good - https://www.tractorforum.com
Some very knowledgeable people.

I doubt it is the governor,, it is the final reduction ratio,,

You need more torque to keep the engine RPM's up,, the only way to do that is install a bigger wheel gear, or a smaller engine gear,,,

OR,,,,, wait for it,,,,

install a larger displacement engine!! :D:thumbsup:

While I agree that more torque is needed, it doesn’t hit max torque until 3200 rpm. There is no way this thing is putting out anything close to that. The governor kicks in so fast it’s ridiculous. I’ve watched videos of people after bypassing the governor and it lets the rpms get up there. I don’t want to completely bypass it bc I do want some limitation of max rpms. I just want to figure out how to adjust the spring to allow it a higher max.

On the one I rebuilt for my grand kids, the governor was actually down by the gas pedal. There was an adjustment bolt that would only allow the pedal to travel so far.

Back the nut and jam nut off, you could get the pedal to travel to the floor. :D

Note: When it was time for testing, the big Kids might have backed it all the way off for some drifting and donut action  Thinking I was the instigator with a couple hold my soda and watch this moments, followed by my son's, and son in law. Then adjusted the governor and allowed the grand kiddos there shot at it.

Power plant was a 105cc scooter engine and Transaxle. Ungoverned, it would top out at 35mph.

This one also has a bolt by the go pedal but it is all the way down and you can floor it. This has a mechanical governor internal by the crank. There is then linkage outside that goes to a spring to the carb that pulls it back wto keep it at a constant rpm.

Can you post some pictures of the linkage in question as well as the throttle pedal area?
There are a million different ways to do it and somebody here might have seen a motor like the one you have if we can see a picture of it.

I’ll get some tonight when I get home.

This is the same engine but this is a mini bike rather than the go cart. This guy bypassed it with a solid wire.
