Parbuckle those logs onto the truck

Ten or so years back, one of the channels I got on cable showed a draft horse logging operation. The horses pulled the logs up beside of a truck with forks that flipped down and loaded the logs much the same way as many bandsaw mills do these days. I think the power to the forks was provided by a cable which, in turn, was lowered by the truck's engine. I never saw another loader like it.

If it's the same show I saw, that type of log loader was powered by cables that are wound by a differential that is located under the truck and powered by a PTO on the tranny. As I recall, when the kid pulls the lever, it locks the brake on one end of the differential, causing all the power to go to the opposite side, which has the winch drum on it. The winch winds rapidly and it basically throws the log up over the side rails onto the bed. The kid lets go of the lever, the brake releases, the winch drum loses power, and the lift arms fall to the ground again. Very effective and kinda dangerous!

I had thought about building one of these side loaders for my trailer. It would make quick work of loading up a couple dozen telephone pole sized logs and bringing them home to cut, VS cutting them on location and having to toss all the rounds onto the trailer. Still thinking about it. Or a rear arch on the trailer. I think that would be more practical for my needs.
