I changed the oil in the wife van last weekend first time. usually it went to a quick lube and oil place. this is what it took to get the drain plug out.

sorry for the itsy-bitsy pic. I had to weld a bolt on the drain plug to use a wrench on it.

Just read through this thread and near a year later a seemingly relativity simple problem is still not resolved. My OCD is like freaking out. FFS man finish what you started.

Anybody ever try one of these:

I don't even know if they're still sold. The concept was sort of like a pipe wrench, more pulling force tightened up on the bolt/nut.

This tool and many like it are the reason why the older generation will always advise the wife of family members to 哲ever buy tools for a birthday or Christmas gift
It was always painful when they saw something on the specialty shelf (bargain rack in today痴 world) and thought he uses tools so they gave you some cheap barely useful at all tool for a gift. Sometimes we had to force ourself s to smile as we wouldn稚 hurt thier feelings but many times the smile was genuine intrig that someone actually thinks the said tool would actually get used on anything other than a table leg.
Most of the tools like that ended up in the junk drawer for her to attempt to use hoping if she did she would learn not to buy them, that was to no avail as she never could put together that the tool was the problem but rather blamed her inability to use it properly. This was even after watching me go straight to the garage or ,barn and get the right tool.
Sadly most of the men in my family didn稚 have he heart to tell them DONT BUY ANY Tools till it was too late and we all have an old toolbox full of things that never really worked.
I can still remember when her Youngest sisters husband to be, decided he would tell the women never to buy us tools! He never realized how much turmoil it could of started.
The good thing is now those that don稚 use tools don稚 buy tools without consulting with the giftie or the very least thier most common garage friend, help or the most trusted mechanical person in the family.

I myself have actually saved many from the dreaded junk tool, unusable tool simply by talking to people who obviously don稚 use tools when you see that certain look on thier face as they look at something a true mechanical person wouldn稚 even think about during the holiday shopping season.

If you want a wrench like it I think I have 3 or 4 of them. One was a gift from my wife, one from my mother and one from my sister and he fourth one was shown to me by a friend who was so happy his wife remembered his birthday and got him a few things, the tool being one of them. Funny part here is he had actually brought his push mower to me that day as it needed repair (back in those days we actually fixed things not just simply buy new) soWe tested his new wrench, I think we were able to remove one or two bolts on a parts mower we had to work with. Anyway he left that useless thing here and never bothered coming back for it again.

This "dog bone" style is a lot better. I have one SAE and one metric:

Although that one can actually accomplish the task of tightening the table legs in the kitchen it is still not a tool I would reach for. I remember well the first variation of it that was a circle design and this is a much improved version with a few less sizes to chose from. It at least looks more serious but still is nothing to me but a filler for the junk drawer as it hasn’t been used since I tried to take a battery terminal off and the opposing end wouldn’t let me turn as it was pressing against the battery.
