Buying a used trailer? Be prudent.

I have Maine plates on my two trailers (in MA.)
A local hauling company has 5 large dump trailers...all are registered in Maine, though the tractors pulling them are registered in MA.

Check out the trailer plates on tractor trailers next time you're out on an interstate. You'll see a lot of Maine plates with tractors that have all different kind of state plates.

Look up the NYS trailer registration laws. They hust state it needs to be registered. But as for vehicles it says must be registered in the state the owner lives.

I know a nys truck inspector. Thats not a ticket they wright and you never see semi trailers registered in NY.

I don't understand all that trouble. Here in VA, you can get a Permanent (non-expiring) trailer plate for $75 +$10 one-time title fee. None of this 5 year stuff.

Do you need to live in the state? Ny is a yearly fee and yearly inspection. I have 3 vehicles and 4 trailers..thats alot of tegistraion fees and trips to the inspection station.

You can home build a trailer,use it on public roads for farm use,keep it below 4k Lbs without safty inspection, titling or registeration in Texas. Sound's all good until you actually do it and get ticketed by cops that don't know it's legal. Make's it cheaper to go through the process than pay tickets or spending time going to court.
Meanwhile,trucks out of Mexico legally operate without registeration,proof of insurance,safty inspection,meeting DOT requirments such as worn tires,leaky brakes and burned out lights.

True....but you must LIVE in VA. to do that.

You DO NOT need to have a Maine residence to have a Maine trailer plate.
The $20 per year is a smoking deal compared to most other states.

I'm a NY resident that does Maine registrations because they're $100 for 5 years. New York is yearly for $75 plus, depending on weight. So that's why the trouble. We don't have the option that VA does.

I am curious . In the states that you make you have your trailer inspected as in Pa and others. What do they check for. Do they pull all the drums and check your brakes as the fellow I bought this trailer off of said they do? I think it is a money making deal.

They check lights and possibly pull one drum in NY.
