Who Should Pay?

If I break something on either a paid or free job I pay for the repairs

So... I can still hear my mother saying it: "Never lend anything you are not prepared to give away and never borrow anything you are not prepared to buy."

Would you expect the neighbor to pay if it entailed a $10,000 engine job instead of a $250 tie rod that was not under warranty?

The neighbor should only pay if there was an unknown situation on their property that caused the breakdown. i.e. a covered over dug well lid that collapsed when you drove over it with a fully loaded FEL and broke your axle. That type of thing.

Your engine breaks down or whatever that would have happened on your property anyway.... then you should pay.

If I pickup a hitchhiker on a public road and my car breaks down:

1) should the hitchhiker pay to repair my car since I was giving him/her a ride?
2) should the public pay to fix my car since I was driving on a public road?
3) should I set up a go fund me site and have suckers pay for it?
4) should I put on my big boy pants and pay for it myself?

A lot of #3 being done these days.

What was it the hitchhiker had to agree with?

OH Yeah, that痴 it!

Gas痴, Grass or You know the one that begins with A !

We all know to get the public痴 money we have to deal with Polaticians, bureaucrats and lawyers which will probably end up costing more than the break, so that痴 out.

So that leaves 3 or 4. There are a lot of suckers out there but your story would have to be a little bit spiced up to attract the ones willing to fork over thier cash and from your post it doesn稚 seem like the hitchicker tried to molest you or fondle you in someway so your probably not going to get more than a few bucks.

So One can only hope that you already had your big boy pants on before you hit the road to begin with

Very wise words from your mom!

I expect to pay for all repairs on my equipment, period. I will loan things out on occasion to friends or family that are responsible people. If something breaks, most likely they would take care of it. If not, I will fix it and move on. There are much bigger things in life to worry about.

Let me clarify a point. The break down is neither operator error or simple wear and tear. It just happened, and would happen to anyone. No one is at fault. Think of something like a hose blowing or sheer pin breaking, etc. But bigger.
So this did happen to me this last Saturday. The tractor catastrophically broke down while mowing brush for my neighbor. It broke in a way that the tractor cannot move on its own. The repair is simple and will cost about $250 for the broken part.
My neighbor immediately told me that he was very sorry and would cover the cost of repair, and assist me in repairing it. Should only take about 30 minutes when the new part comes in. I suggested option 2, since its my tractor. We agreed to split it. I am just curious about your opinions. This whole thing is resolved.
The break is nothing anyone could have foreseen.

Originally I was solely on option 2, After this clarification, I would still go with option 2 first, but I would let them twist my arm and pay for half if they insist. I would rather have a good neghbor that knows he owes me one. However, I will quit if I notice the trend being you only call when you want something done or fixed.
