Since this has devolved way off topic....kind of same for my mother in law and her "man". Not sure what to call him...boyfriend? They've been living together for 10+ yrs, together as a couple longer than that, but are not married, no intention of getting married. He has a huge firearms collection. I thought I had a fair amount of guns until I saw his
. A lot just general shooters or hunting rifles, but all the Colts snake guns among other valued collectables in the mix as well. No idea if TN considers it common law marriage or not.
Anyway, he's said to her & us several times "when I die, hurry and come get all the guns & anything else you want before my sisters do. I don't want them having any of that stuff." But won't do a will to say just that. His sisters are his next of kin. Doesn't matter that they're estranged. Not married to my MIL, no will saying guns go to me when he dies, I'm not touching them. I would very, very much love to have them and irks me that his sisters will take them straight to pawn shop (imagine someone letting go a PAIR of Colt Pythons, one of them in new condition, the other shot some but very good overall for what the pawn shop would give in that situation for 2 old women not knowing what they had).
Unless TN considers them common law married...when he dies, MIL is homeless and his sisters have legal claim to everything. Last thing I want is to be in his driveway loading up truck & trailer with things he told me a dozen times to take when he dies and his sisters showing up with sheriff's deputies in tow..... I'm not fighting that fight.....
