Go Bag, not a Bug Out Bag

Since this has devolved way off topic....kind of same for my mother in law and her "man". Not sure what to call him...boyfriend? They've been living together for 10+ yrs, together as a couple longer than that, but are not married, no intention of getting married. He has a huge firearms collection. I thought I had a fair amount of guns until I saw his :). A lot just general shooters or hunting rifles, but all the Colts snake guns among other valued collectables in the mix as well. No idea if TN considers it common law marriage or not.

Anyway, he's said to her & us several times "when I die, hurry and come get all the guns & anything else you want before my sisters do. I don't want them having any of that stuff." But won't do a will to say just that. His sisters are his next of kin. Doesn't matter that they're estranged. Not married to my MIL, no will saying guns go to me when he dies, I'm not touching them. I would very, very much love to have them and irks me that his sisters will take them straight to pawn shop (imagine someone letting go a PAIR of Colt Pythons, one of them in new condition, the other shot some but very good overall for what the pawn shop would give in that situation for 2 old women not knowing what they had).

Unless TN considers them common law married...when he dies, MIL is homeless and his sisters have legal claim to everything. Last thing I want is to be in his driveway loading up truck & trailer with things he told me a dozen times to take when he dies and his sisters showing up with sheriff's deputies in tow..... I'm not fighting that fight.....

What do you use for water containers? We just have several partially-full plastic bottles as it freezes solid.
That's what I carry in winter also; plus enough for the day. In theory if I'm stranded long enough to need the water, I will have time to melt it.

When I worked at the airport I knew a corporate pilot that had several children with his wife, and for whatever reason, got divorced. 10 or so years later, he starts dating the receptionist in our office. They hit it off nicely and got married. A couple years later, he died in a plane crash (faulty ground instruments guided him right into the side of a mountain, not his fault). He came home in a shoebox. Nothing left. At the funeral, his kids tell her she and her daughter from a previous relationship have 4 weeks to get out of the house. HUH? He never changed the deed on the house, and didn't take his ex-wife off of it. It was very sad. She lost her husband and was homeless in a week.

That's why you do a pre-nup, especially in a 2nd marriage and/or if spouse's net worths are quite different.
I owned our present house before my wife and I got married, and there's a clause in our pre-nup stating that if I predecease her she has lifetime tenancy. I can't picture my sisters doing anything like that, but better safe than sorry.
When we later did our wills, we had the lawyer that did them review the pre-nup and she assured us that it will stand legally.

If I'm prying too much, just tell me, but...

Why don't you just put your wife's name on the deed of the house with yours? What do your sisters have to do with "your" house? I do not understand.

Back to the original topic for a minute- I always make sure that I have enough fuel to make the 200 mild trip. You can lose a lot of time finding an open gas station at 2:00 AM.

My 1993 Suburban has about a 750 mile range.... 42 gallon tank... this is what I look like when I filled the tank back when gas was over $4 a gallon....

I try and keep all of our vehicles filled during the winter. Not so much in summer. There's lots of 7/11's and 24 hour Walmarts around here. Truck stops, too.

Jstpssng - interesting comment. Difficulty finding an open gas station at 2AM. Around here - ALL gas stations are open 24/7/365. They are not "manned" but if you have a credit card - they are open. You need the feature I have on both my BMW cycle & Power Wagon. It will locate the nearest gas station and show on the GPS feature the shortest route there. I have NEVER run out, but one time it was mighty close.

On second thought - is Maine one of the states that requires gas be dispensed by an attendant? WA is not.

Finally got everything together and have it all in an easy to carry backpack. If I had to fly or drive somewhere all I would need would be this backpack, my wallet, and my cellphone. I could make it in a motel or a hospital waiting room for a week or more if necessary. I have slept on a hospital waiting room couch and washed socks, underwear, and t-shirts in a bathroom sink before and I could do so again if needed.

Contents are as follows.

Backpack front pockets (easy to reach):

I-phone charger
Reading glasses
small bag of cough drops
ear plugs
roll of quarters
(4) "One Wipe Charlies"
tube of Naproxen Sodium (Aleve)
small bottle of Visine
pocket first aid kit
re-sealable package of Wet Wipes
notebook and pen
package of Wurthers sugar free candy
pack of peanut butter and crackers

In other easy to reach pockets are:

tube of anti-diarrhea pills
tube of motion sickness pills
tube of sleep-aid pills

In the main body of the backpack are a shave kit and:

(2) T-shirts
(2) pair underwear
(2) pair of socks
pair of sleep pants
long sleeve pocket T-shirt (This can be worn by itself or under another shirt for warmth)
laundry kit in Zip-Lock bag with (2) detergent tabs and (2) Bounce sheets
small air tight tin with tea bags, coffee bags, and Splenda pouches

In the shave kit are:

seven day supply of medications for both morning and night
toothbrush in unopened package
toothpaste in unopened package
disposable razor
tube of shave butter
hand sanitizer
pack of tissue
tube of lip balm
(6) "One Wipe Charlies"
power strip
comb
travel pack of Q-Tips
(2) empty Zip-Lock bags

Inside a Zip-Lock in the shave bag are:

shampoo
deodorant
bar of soap
small hotel bottle of mouth wash
small bottle of Palmolive liquid detergent

There are two pockets on the sides that water bottles would be put in prior to departure.

This is loosely based on what we ended up with while sitting in the hospital for a few days waiting on a critical relative.

Water bottles...good idea. You might also have one of those emergency auto kits in you vehicle, plus one of those air-up-your-tires pumps that plug into the cigarette lighter.
