Never mind associations. One boss of mine lived in an affluent neighborhood and his wife would not let him bring the company vans or pickup (Dually) home. What a looser! Those vehicles were putting the roof over her head!

Memories!

Before we were married, I asked "my wife to be", which would she prefer, a diamond ring on her finger or a roof over her head? When she chose a roof over her head, I knew I chose the right woman. Now going on 47 years and still happily married.

We used what I would have spent on a diamond ring towards a down payment on a house.

That makes no sense. Was your wife’s car a gift? Was the house you both lived in a gift? If your wife had no job was everything else a gift? And alimony is ridiculous. I agree with child support unless there’s 50/50 shared custody but not alimony.

A former coworker left a good job and went across the country with his wife as she went to school and training to become a doctor. He stayed home and took care of the kids while she built up her practice, until they started school and he could go to work again. Then she left him for another woman... he doesn't get any of her income, even though he put his career on hold to advance hers.

I always heard that an engagement ring is a "conditional gift" representing a contract or sorts and had to be returned if the engagement was broken off. That's why men should never propose on Christmas or her birthday so it can't be construed as an unconditional gift.

If the wedding happens, the condition has been fulfilled and it's now a "gift".

I suppose one could argue that the gift was "conditional" on being married until "death do you part", and the divorce negates that, thus the man should get it back. Good case for a lawyer.

If the man was given an expensive "gift", which would never happen, but if it was tradition, I bet, it would be expected back, or figured into the equasion!
