I would diffidently check the price on a whole new front end. Then get a price from a good front end repair guy and they aren't always found at a tractor dealership, so that could be hard to find and when it comes to gears and moving parts it has to be done right.

That's for sure..
To be honest you may be better off looking for another tractor and cutting you losses by trading or selling that one... if you got a new axle asmbly which is next to impossible to get... or if you took it into have it worked on you would be spending well over half what the entire machine is worth outright

Sell the tractor? Whole new axle? We aren’t putting a man on the moon- it’s a ring and pinion!!! They can be changed- it’s not the end of an axle, machine or the world.
Right for someone who is comfortable fixing it then that's the best option but to buy a new axle or taking it in to have it worked on your going to have to much into the tractor

And just what will he get for the tractor trading it in or trying to sell it as is? Until he actually gets a firm estimate as to what the cost of rebuilding the front axle would be, I wouldn't be too quick to wright the whole tractor off.

I'm moving forward with removing the whole axle today and will start getting a better look at things. I will look into finding someone capable of fixing it, or at least the portions that I don't believe I should be fixing on my own. I've worked on my fair amount of automobiles/machinery, enough that I know at least a little bit and have a pretty good assortment of tools, but I'll look towards ya'll for guidance on what areas I should outsource vs. do on my own. Regardless of how much I would get selling the tractor vs. how much this is going to cost me, I am not in a position to just buy a new tractor, nor am I of the mindset that I should just scrap a machine just because the axle is stoved up. The rest of the machine is perfectly good.

Once the axle is out a local shop can set backlash. If u have time you can make “setup” bearings with the old set. But that takes time. The problem is the bearings typically need to go on and off a few times and they don’t easily pull or press off without damage. I know of one guy who makes a puller that doesn’t damage bearings but it has been years since I researched that. Obviously a shop can do all this- it should be a few hours if all they are doing is setting backlash on a 3rd member/center section/axle.
