Xj2025h best pto wood chipper

sea2summit,
I have just gone through a similar analysis for a PTO chipper for my Kubota BX25. Based on my research, I settled on a Value Leader VL-WCX5 from BETSTCO. It can do 5". I considered the following models:
Titan BX42S - Flywheel = 75lbs, Diam = 25", wgt = 431, cap = 4"
Jinma - nice but too big for my tractor
DR - FW=50lbs, Diam = 17.75", 255 lbs., cap = 4.75"
WoodMaxx WM-8M = FW=200 lbs, diam - 24", ~800lbs, cap = 6.25 (nice, but too big)
BESTCO VL-WCRHD, 820lbs, (too big)
Woodmaxx TM-86H (really liked it but thought it was too big and too expensive for me) FW=120 lbs, 24" diam., 6", 595lbs
Value Leader VL-WCX5, (Just right I thought!) FW=115 lbs, diam. = 25", cap 5", 465 lbs. Basically, this is like the Wallenstein BX42, but with a larger and heavier flywheel and a few other improvements. Just ordered it so don't have any feedback I can offer yet. If interested, here is the site. My thinking is that the extra inertial weight/force on the flywheel will help the BX25 handle intermittent heavy loading better than some others with this size stated capacity. BTW, I really liked the Titan and the WoodMaxx TM-86H too, but this is a tradeoff between price and hoped for capacity on my sized tractor. Good luck on your quest!

The simple fact is - you will not find a chipper that will handle 6" material with 18.5 pto hp.

I have a Wallenstein BX62S chipper. I run it with my Kubota M6040 with 55 pto hp. This Wallenstein is rated at 6.5" max diameter for chipping. It will handle the continuous feeding of dry 6" pines. It is very near a maximum load for this chipper & tractor.

I can't imagine much that is easier to chip than pine trees. You get into dry hardwoods and you will need a good supply of shear pins.

6" material with 18.5 pto hp

Went to the XJ2025h's specs and found that it's pto hp is also 18.5

As previously mentioned, when it was delivered, I assumed that the WoodMaxx 8M would be too big for the LS... period, but it turned out to be well matched even if it was under powered based on it's specs and capabilities.

I chipped a number of cedar trunks that were in excess of 6" and when I first tried feeding them, I was assuming that the tractor would not handle them and was amazed when it did.

From my perspective, the two major factors that allowed chipping that diameter are the flywheel weight and the increased flywheel rpm via the belt drive, probably helped by blades that were new and sharp.

I am not, in any way, saying that anyone should purchase based on expecting to primarily chip something that diameter with that hp, just that I found that when I needed to do so, I could.

The 86H on the LS, in contrast, has significantly less capacity... around 5" depending on the wood type and condition. The main reason is that it has a lighter flywheel and the flywheel is directly driven by the pto.

A couple of days ago I chipped a couple of dry sections with the 86H that were a little larger than 5" but had to make use of the hydraulic control options to pause the feed several times to allow the LS to get back up to speed. Had I taken the time to reduce the feed speed, it would have probably chipped without needing to pause the feed.

Hope that this information is of value,
Beverly Howard

Reading all the post about this wood chipper that wood chipper I'm still not sure what I want to do. I really like the woodmaxx 86h but not convinced the xj2025h I can handle it. Beverly can you convince me? I've also been looking at stand-alone chippers with their own engines but they are around 9000 used hate to spend that much money because you never know what you're getting.

this sounds very similar to the Titan BX62, which of course is their knockoff on the wallenstein of the same number. I really like my bx42s, anything over 3 or so inches we're cutting up for firewood anyway :)

The last thing I want to do is convince you. I don't want that responsibility ;-)

I'm trying to put information out there so you can make an informed decision.

What kind of wood and what size will you be chipping? Green or dry?

That said, I now have about 175 hours on my xj2025h, and while I don't have an exact breakdown, I'd estimate that around 140 hours have been used for chipping, probably 75% of that cedar, but a significant amount of oak and the rest "brush" ...primarily nandina.

About 100 hours was chipping with the 8M, and around 40 hours chipping with the 86H.

After the 8M, the xj2025h almost giggles when the 86H is attached and in use. It has zero problems powering the 86H.

The biggest problem that the xj2025h had with the 8M was just getting things moving... I found that with the 8m I had to go between 1600 and 1800 rpm before I engaged the pto clutch or it would stall the engine, but, after that, no problems.

I've also been looking at stand-alone chippers with their own engines

fiww, we had a 6HP Patriot chipper for almost 10 years and while we both considered it the most valuable tool we had at the time, I am _so_ glad I will never have to use that or any other stand alone chipper again.

Among other considerations is that with any pto chipper you should get much more capacity per $ and you only have one engine to maintain and with the xj, that seems to be a very reliable engine.

If anyone is interested, I have some additional feedback on a few "issues" (none that I would consider "serious") that I had with both chippers and sent to WoodMaxx that I will post.

Titan BX62

A huge difference is that the Titan BX62 is manual feed.

That is a killer for any user because of the continuous impact feedback to your hands and arms as you feed the chipper. I'm pretty sure that the joint pain issues that I have now in my hands is from a decade using the manual feed Patriot chipper.

When I was researching pto chippers, I found a titan owner who allowed me to come out and chip some branches and, comparing it to the 6hp Patriot, I was not impressed.

fwiw, I did several months of intensive research for pto chippers after I got the LS, and, quite frankly, I didn't find anything that looked like a good fit. I was actually in the process placing an order for a different chipper, but before I hit "Send" I decided to look again and found WoodMaxx. After another week of looking at everything I could find on them, I ordered the 8M ...and, the rest is history.
