I've had two manual feed chippers. Wallenstein BX42S and now - BX62S. Neither have required that I stand and push anything into the chipper. When it's chipping, it "pulls" so hard - it's scared a few folks who have come out to help. One gal let out a short scream and jumped back.

Once a fresh cut pine tree hits the blades - there is ABSOLUTELY no backing out. I just drop them in the in-feed chute - turn and go grab another.

My pines average - 3" x 22'. The range is - 1" to 6".

If you have to continuously "push" - - something isn't right.

exactly how mine, the BX42S works too OOSIK, once I get it started, it pulls it right on through, I can turn around and walk away. By the time I get back with the next limb, that one is chipped and in the pile. The tree guy really liked how easy it was to get to the flywheel to clear clogs, or access the blades. He said it was a half hour deal to clear a clog on his old one. He didn't say what brand it was, but he no longer had it.
I bought the BX42S based on 3 things:
1 - ordered from Titan, and paid $1100 for it. Cost was a big factor for me, free shipping and it was here in less than a week
2 - it falls perfectly in the range for my tractor according to the specs
3 - it only chips up to a 3" with my HP range, but anything bigger than that we cut up for firewood anyway

all my neighbors love me, I regularly clear any fallen limbs for them, LOL building a pretty decent mulch pile that's aging nicely. Today I'm going out to (hopefully) finish cleaning up the limbs from that pine we had cut down, as a big part of the mess is in the way of where we want to plant some trees that got here yesterday from the arbor day foundation

Replying to my own previous post to advise on the results of my new Value Leader VL-WCX5 5" chipper.
Basically, I could not be happier! It easily handles 5" limbs/trunks without overtaxing my BX25. I have put about 12 hours on it already and just today sharpened the blades and re-greased, etc. The blades were not very dulled, but I could see that the unit was not pulling the wood into the chipper as well as before. The sharpening restored the pulling function fully. I do not need to push anything in or stand there to feed it. The extra heavy and large flywheel makes a huge difference I believe in the performance (115 lbs, 25" diameter). The tractor does not bog down on the largest pieces that can fit through the sluice dimension. It was a bit challenging to put everything together because the directions are not very good. I saw some videos online after putting it together that I wish I had watched first. Also, I used my plasma cutter to take the shipping cage apart, which was a lot less work than using a grinder. All in all, I would buy this same unit again. As the name implies, it is a great value for the price, especially with the current price discount they offer and free shipping. The unit works fine on the quick hitch assembly I have. Also, I encourage getting the optional legs with the unit. They are well made and I couldn't make my own hardly for the price of the steel. I was worried about unloading the 500lb container from the truck with my forks on the front end loader, so I shim adjusted the Kubota hydraulics up to factory specs. It lifted the chipper off the truck fine. No worries. Hope this helps.

I bought the Woodmaxx TM-86H, the clincher for me was the hydraulic feed and safety stop bar. I end up working alone a lot and the safety feature is great. The other thing the variable feed does is allows me to slow it down preventing the tractor from bogging on larger limbs and it makes some really nice smaller chips for the garden. I have a bin I strap to my forks then drop it with the forks still strapped to it and chip directly into it. Then reconnect it to the FEL and go dump them where needed IMG_8952.jpg

I keep coming back to the 86H. Guess it's time to put an end to the procrastination. Thanks for your input.

Welcome to the pto chipper club! Nice setup, especially if you are chipping large amounts of brush and the chips need to go elsewhere.

One if the surprising thing about chippers in general is the low volume of chips after chipping major amounts of brush, so, it's going to take a while to fill that bin to capacity ;-)

Tip based on my experience, check the torque on _every_ bolt on the unit, not just what you had to assemble and grease every zerk you can find.

A curiosity question. When I got mine several years ago, the mate between the hopper and the feed assembly was off by about 3/8" inch and the ledge would stop small straight stems from smoothly feeding and coaxing over the lip. I solved the problem by grinding the edge to a 45 degree bevel and reported it to Woodmaxx, but wonder if they ever addressed the misalignment.

As someone else noted, the only ongoing problem that I have encountered is when chipping small, wet soft material (notably Confederate Jasmin and Bamboo) that the chute would clog, so, another mod that I made was to weld a short length of 1/4" rod to the bolt that secures the flywheel cover so that when it does happen, it only takes a single wrench to open the cover, clear the jam and re-secure the cover.

The simple fact is - you will not find a chipper that will handle 6" material with 18.5 pto hp.

I have a Wallenstein BX62S chipper. I run it with my Kubota M6040 with 55 pto hp. This Wallenstein is rated at 6.5" max diameter for chipping. It will handle the continuous feeding of dry 6" pines. It is very near a maximum load for this chipper & tractor.

I can't imagine much that is easier to chip than pine trees. You get into dry hardwoods and you will need a good supply of shear pins.

I completely agree with Oosik. I chip a lot of material every year, and have run my Wallenstein BX-62 behind my 30HP and 85HP (PTO) tractors. Green Douglas fir is pretty easy to chip but I can stall the small tractor pretty easily on anything bigger than 4” dia.

Put the same chipper behind the green tractor and it eats anything that will fit in the hopper.
I make sure I have extra sheer bolts though, cause I’ll break a couple in a days work.

I suspect hydraulic feed units can handle slightly bigger limbs per HP than self feed units because of the speed at which they chip.

After many weeks of research and looking at all the prices and various wood chippers I decided to go the cheaper route and just purchased the betstco 4" cheaper. Although I wanted a larger chipper unfortunately my LS xj2025h can't handle much more than that. It's a pinch/pull feed but I only have two acres and 99% of what I'm going to chip is Pine. I'll let you know my true thoughts after I get it and try it out. I never pull any punches.

good for you! take some pics and a video or two and post up! I love my little BX42s, and my neighbors all love me cause I keep their yards cleaned up for them. Going to have to get busy, I just used up my chip pile mulching between the rows in the garden :)

Bought betstco bx42 4". They claim I need a 5/16 x 2 inch GRADE 5 sheer bolt. Can't find any and I told him that but they haven't gotten back to me

do you have a tractor supply anywhere close? you can buy them by the pound there. Put the nuts on the bolts and it's all the same cost per pound.

Home Depot should have grade five as well, I would suspect Lowes does as well. I've had the best luck on harder to find stuff, like a grease zerk for example, at the local family owned "not a chain store" hardware store....

good luck!
and yes, you'll get the feel for what will break one, and you'll learn to watch the discharge shoot to make sure it's not stopped up, which will also break one. Ask me how I know these things....IF you need to
