Third Function Valve Project/ valve question for the hydraulic guys

I have been looking at adding a grapple & after looking at MANY thread I think I would prefer Gordon's set-up to an "electric over hydraulic" control.

I have access to an open center valve that is about the right GPM but doesn't have a power beyond port.

Going by Gordon's hydraulic diagram, could the PB line from the loader valve be "T'd" to feed both the 3PH & the new grapple control?

Re: Third Function Valve Project/ valve question for the hydraulic guys

No, tees are not allowed as the flow would travel to the path of least resistance.

All valves in an open center hyd system should be in series.

If you are talking about a solenoid valve, and DO3 subplate, most hyd blocks are high pressure, so just add the 3rd function valve in series with the FEL and the grapple.

You do know a solenoid valve will provide full flow to the grapple.

I assumed you were talking about a solenoid valve.

However, look at the lever valve specs and see what the tank ports rating is. What is the manufacturer and model number of the valve?

If it says the max tank port is about 500 psi, that is the highest pressure or back pressure that the valve should see.

If you choose to use it anyway, , you are at risk of damages.

Why not use a diverter valve to control a grapple?

Thanks for the reply JJ. Makes sense that it wouldn't see any flow. I'll just source out the right type.

Re: Third Function Valve Project/ valve question for the hydraulic guys

The valve I was asking about is a regular lever type valve that I could get inexpensively from a friend, but no power beyond. Not sure of the make/model as I haven't seen it.

I do realize that the solenoid-type is full power on/off which is why I am interested in the all-hydraulic type in this thread.

Re: Third Function Valve Project/ valve question for the hydraulic guys

This is just about typical of a valve description.

SPECIFICATIONS
Pressure Rating
Maximum Operating Pressure ........ 3000 psi
Maximum Tank Pressure................... 500 psi
Nominal Flow Rating ...........................30 G

This kind of valve could be used as the last valve in a hyd system, but when used on a tractor, the 3pt is the last valve in the system.

You might get away for a short time with luck and use that valve in a series system, or it may last a long time if you don't over pressurize the hyd upstream , which is typical when you are using the 3pt.

Re: Third Function Valve Project/ valve question for the hydraulic guys

So I blindly ordered the fittings exactly off the parts list previously posted here. The hydraulic diagram calls for 90s (ORB to JIC) for every direct valve connection. The 90's on the Tank/PB and output ports cannot be installed at the same time due to their close proximity. In other words, they cannot be installed at the same time due to clearance issues. I am aware that I can buy more parts but I'm wondering how no one else has had this issue? Also, a recommendation on the cheapest way to correct this would be appreciated. "Long" fittings are not cheap compared to their short counterparts.

I used ORB standoffs on my setup.

There is an alternative to JIC fittings and expensive angled hose end fittings...the alternative is NPSM swivel fittings...They are mechanical fittings that require NO sealant or tape etc...they are actually more robust than JIC flares...

Using NPSM adapters (can be had with most common port threads, SAE/ORB, NTP, etc., etc...) can make ordering hoses a breeze if you use NPSM adapters on the valves/cylinders etc... hoses can be ordered with nothing but straight NTP threads (very inexpensive) and there is no orientation to worry about when both ends of a hose require an angled fitting...

SAE Straight Thread (ORB) scroll to the bottom...

Female Pipe Swivels (NPSM)

Re: Third Function Valve Project/ valve question for the hydraulic guys

I ended up ordering from discounthydraulichose this morning what I think will work. Male ORB to female JIC with swivel nut. That should allow me to screw the ORB Male into the valve, then tighten a male JIC 90 onto the new fitting. I ordered two JIC Male to JIC Male 90's as well. Assuming I am interpreting the definition of "Swivel" correctly I believe this will work?

6402-08-06 | #8 SAE/ORB Male x 3/8" JIC Female

[Edit] Insane.. I ordered hyd oil direct from Schaeffer Sunday evening. I just got my tracking number today, UPS has yet to receive the item. I ordered fittings from discounthydraulichose at 8:30am this morning and USPS has already received the package as of 5:30pm. I may not get to use my new grapple this weekend not because of the fittings I ordered today but the oil I ordered Sunday.. LOL
