Marijuana on the job

Life is tough enough even if you do all the right things, good diet, exercise, alleviate stress, proper sleep, etc.
I've had so many friends, acquaintances, family members now deceased because of various addictions.
One very good friend said at the end "there's no higher high than sobriety". He was always addicted to something throughout his life, then clean and sober a year before he passed (rip).
Just my thoughts...eviscerate me if you want.

The number of people I see walking the streets with addictions just amazes me. I'm talking about staring into their phones or holding a cup of Tim Hortons Coffee. Sometimes in the other hand. Just because you are not addicted to a substance, doesn't mean you don't have some kind of addiction. Even, this site!

They say, what bothers people the most about others, is what is within themselves but not always exactly the same. People are only ever mirrors for ourselves.

Reality seems to be the hardest pill to swallow these days..

Having been through multiple trauma and 40 years of paraplegia I have become a very strong minded individual, things that others can't seem to tolerate I can for some reason, I take nothing for pain or muscle spasms because I don't like putting things into my body that don't belong there. I feel that there are so many medications coming out of the woodwork that are unnecessary and have adverse effects on the body.

I am addicted to food, I cannot seem to live without it!

The US jails a very high percentage of its population for marijuana use or dealing,
which means a lot of "otherwise" capable folks are out of the workforce.
Like folks with more than X? amount, over some limit, often too low, you go to jail and now we house and feed you.
So when you get out are you going right back to selling pot to your friends?
And costing all of us a huge amount of money in taxes to house and feed you?.
But without punishment how do you get deterrence?
Age old question.
Re-education? And I don't mean brutally or physically.

In the bigger picture this reminds me of Prohibition. Where lots of money was made illegally until the US Govt decided to let free enterprise and State Liquor stores go back to business.
What we need to prohibit is visible smoke, force public users who can't seem to do without, or choose not to, to filter their exhaust. Like a car...
I don't want to smell it and I bet most of you don't either. Even more with kids around. I would feel very uncomfortable being around someone smoking pot publicly near children. I guess I'm too old fashioned and I just don't think it's right.

I've always believed in John Stuart Mill, who I paraphrase to mean do what you want as long as you don't hurt others.
Today that means driving sober, and being bright eyed and bushy tailed on nothing but coffee when you show up for work.
So to address the original title here, Marijuana at work, well except for the issue of hiring, I think there is no issue. You have to be sober at work, no exceptions, unless the company expressly permits. Like you are screen writers for a Broadway play and you need your creativity.
Or something. ;)

None of us should have to worry about second hand smoke from cigarettes, joints, cigars for sure and even pipes. Products of combustion are not good for your health. As an old fireman I can tell you avoid them at all costs. I was the generation after the Old Leather Lungs. Airpaks and approach suits, were just now standard. I have breathed in some stuff at fires that have made me sick, including burning magnesium from a VW engine. If something's smoking, you most likely shouldn't be breathing it I really do believe...

Maybe this is why vaping is so big now. Maybe the filtering part is already handled. I'm really behind the times here...

You're right...the Feds are in denial.
Legalization or "decriminalization" of pot should have taken place at the federal level rather the letting the states do what they wanted. This was a failure on Obama's part and, unfortunately, continued during the Trump administration.
President Trump has already stated he'd sign a legalization bill, but to the best of my knowledge, none has been put forth.
So, people are at risk by thinking pot is legal...it's not.
Now, I smoked pot from the 1970's through 1990's and I do think it should be legal...once there is a reliable test for impairment

Only a matter of time from when something starts in California... Same Sex Marriage, Marijuana, Unleaded Gas, Emission Controls, Green Tax Credits, etc...

There are High, stoned or drunk People driving better than some cold sober ones. That's a fact that some people don't want to acknowledge. My lady friend has a "thing" about dope, and any mention of it, just makes her annoyed. Not sure why, I have never dared ask. But not a very objective viewpoint on the subject. I never cared for the stuff, and always hated the smell, but a good number of people I knew, used regularly.

I had an incident 30 some years ago where an non-unionized vehicle mechanic appeared to be drunk on the job. I confronted him and then made the mistake of letting him go back to his tool box to put his tools away. As I later learned from our firm's lawyer, just the act of letting him go back to his tool box prevented our firm from taking further action. I was told by the lawyer that if I felt the employee was in a state to go back to his tool box, I couldn't then say he was too drunk to work. It never got to court so we'll never know what a judge would have ruled.

In any event, that night (well after working hours) the employee was stopped by the police for DUI, his fourth. Upon conviction the employer successfully terminated the employee. Each jurisdiction and work place is different and only your firm's legal counsel can advise on the law where you are. Still, I tried to be a nice guy and it bit me in the as*&^

My Step Dad was an Electrician at a Steel Mill. I think, he rarely went to work without at least having had a Brandy with a Beer chaser, or two! One day he drove through the gate and the guard asked him where he was going? He looked at the guard face on, maybe a little too close, and said "H O T Mill", whereupon the guard smelled the booze (brandy really stinks) and all kinds of policy was set into motion. My step Dad's Boss was summoned and I think my Step Dad had to go home. Times were different in the 80s, but it was funny, because he had such a routine, and never had a problem.
