Hmmm. I inquired about an FX17D a while back and it seemed to be a rare model. I hope more information has appeared since then.

https://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/yanmar/261736-fx17d.html

I read that post when doing some of my initial research. To my understanding the FX models are more rare that the F models. I think the FX models had a shuttle drive option were as the F models were all gear drive only.

Only time will tell if my purchase was a good deal. When and if I need replacement parts I at least know were to start with both Fredricks & Hoye being out there. One thing I have heard is that since the F series tractors are newer versions than the older YM models most folks here seem to love there is a gap in parts being imported but they are catching up since more are being imported these days.

I am just glad the ones of us with YM models have access to parts like we do. I hope my 2 tractors are still running when my son wants them

Enjoy your tractor. I have an F14d, similar I think but smaller. I have done a few maintenance jobs, most recent being new front axle swivel seals. Please post about any work you do on it

The FX17D is 4 wheel drive instead of just rear wheel drive.

The "D" is what indicates 4wd not the FX. Not sure about the differences between and FX and an F model.

It would be nice to find a ROPS for your F-Series Yanmar. I had posted either on this forum or the other tractor forum about the 70% rebate price for ROPS from the National ROPS Program. To qualify, one simple thing needed to be met, an older tractor. :)

Fredricks is the main source to get a ROPS for tractors. I love their folding ROPS setup. It's beefier than the John Deere CUT tractors Yanmar supplied during the YM series era. My YM2610 ROPS is far better than a John Deere 850/950 era ROPS. I have mounted a small tool carry-all, lights and hopefully soon a canopy top. I need a drink holder too. The ROPS is nearly the ideal place for all of this.

Fredricks uses Custom Products manufacturing as the OE fabricator for their ROPS. It says so right on the ROPS. I got images of them too someplace on the computer ...

Nice machine BTW. TractorData.com Yanmar F17D tractor information It's ratings are nearly like my YM2610. :) Truly the middle of the pack. Not too small and not too large. Easy to work on.

I have the JD 850/950 ROPS diagram, but that's just bulky. See image.

I've added the Fredricks ROPS master PDF here. It also has the ROPS drawings. Look at what type may fit your F17D. Just take some measuremnts and compare. :)

Here's their label for YM2000. I bought this via a Hoye Ebay auction then saw the manual was printed by Fredricks. This was one of their first ROPS sales. At the time nobody knew if the YM2000 ROPS would fit YM240. It is a perfect fit on YM240 (US version of YM2000).

Here's the thread - with more photos - where I described installing it.

Your tractor has 9 more PTO HP than his tractor though. A good bit more tractor.

How would they not know. I would think those guys realized the 240 and 2000 was basically identical. Sheet metal and axles etc are the same?

I'll bet Aaron has been burned many times by subtle differences in year model (actually, serial # series) or US/Japan variants. My local Deere dealer advertises as 'Authorized Yanmar Parts' but the parts manager told me they won't support my YM240, they had experienced too many returns of US Yanmar parts that wouldn't fit gray market Yanmars.

Aaron told me this ROPS was returnable for full credit if I paid return shipping. This was an experiment for both of us. It fit fine.

YM240/YM2000? Everything is the same except a different pto gear module (interchangeable with YM200 version) that has 540/1000 speeds and an overrun clutch. And an added crank in the throttle linkage to make it push/fast, pull/slow. I can't think of anything else. Oh, they changed early/late sheet metal at the same time but persisted with green paint on the later US sheet metal, mine is an example.

Final year (1981?) YM240 and the other US Yanmars at that time got the Donaldson-type air cleaner with a pre-filter on top of a mast then the filter element outside the left side of the hood. Mine doesn't have that, the air filter is identical to YM2000.

YM2000 production run, or at least sales, ended a couple of years earlier in Japan than the end of YM240 in the US.

I can't think of any other YM240/YM2000 differences at all.

I bought an F17D something like 15 years ago and it's been a good little tractor that I have heartily abused. Pretty sure the D is for Diesel. Had about 700 hours on it and I believe that was accurate. Either the steering gearbox (manual) was broken when I got it or I broke it, so I replaced it with one from an early Ford car, that took a little fabrication but I got it to fit and work like it should and it was a much stronger unit. Next I replaced the drag link with one from a Scout that had a power steering valve in it and mounted the assist cylinder. I found a compact pump and reservoir out of a car, probably one of the Korean ones and got that to fit as well so I then had power steering. Made a bucket from old skid steer parts that were caught in a fire. Later I picked up a 3 pt hitch snow blower so to make that work I pulled the Ford gearbox and mounted up a hydrostatic unit and plumbed it in, adding a shuttle valve to reverse the lines, and found a folding seat to mount on the hood. Made a greenhouse out of conduit and vinyl which I have just got done upgrading to 60 ga vinyl.

So here's how it works. I mount up the snow blower, complete with an old winch motor for directional control of the chute, mount the greenhouse to the loader attachment points and anchored to the fender grab handles in the back, slide the seat on the hood as close to the steering wheel as it will go and fold it open, and switch the shuttle valve for reversed steering. Then I board the tractor and sit in the hood seat facing rearward. The steering wheel is tall enough to let me do this. I can still use the clutch and brakes fine although they are on opposite sides. Shifter, hydraulics and chute controls are all within handy reach. as is PTO. So I drive it more or less like normal only with rear wheel steer.

Almost forgot, a long time ago I ran the exhaust up to a stack instead of down so I add an insulated extension when I put on the greenhouse so it won't burn the vinyl.

Summertime I pull the greenhouse, chains and snowblower and mount the bucket. I have a nice 7 ft New Holland sickle bar mower I use sometimes and 4 ft tiller that I'm trying to fit a driveway brush to and that's about it these days. I also have a 3pt concrete mixer that gets used every now and then.

I've had to replace the glow plugs, the wires on the alternator broke, the shutoff for the injector pump failed so I fitted a rod with a loop to pull as a shutoff. I fitted aux hydraulics which work very well. Just cobbled it together with Prince valves and 3/8" hard line.

Also early on I got rid of the rice paddy tires. On the rear I fitted a set of 15" Chevy 6 lug chrome reverse wheels and mounted up a pair of 35" mud tires (for yard work, I had a finish mower at the time)and for the front I just had to cobble something together as there wasn't anything that fit. Ended up making up a set of centers and bolting them to the wheel weight lugs of a set of rims so I could mount some tires that would work with the rears.

I did have a bearing go out in one of the front wheel uprights but I was able to just replace the bearing and the gears were OK.

Horn still works and so do the headlights. It's been a tough little tractor.

Very interesting. The D stands for 4 wheel drive. Would be an F17 without it.
