Re: Friend逞エ 9-year old daughter in surgery after stray dog attack.

My GSD is very well behaved. We get many compliments on her behavior. She will never be left alone with a child under 16 and truthfully there are adults who I wouldn稚 leave her with. Or more accurately who I wouldn稚 trust to be unsupervised with her.

And it isn稚 necessarily the size of the dog. Some years ago I found a CDC list of ten breeds which were involved with the most human fatalities. At that time, Cocker Spaniels were on the list. I知 guessing a big part of the problems is poor ownership.

In the OPç—´ case, where was the dogç—´ owner. Why was it running loose? A little girl is paying a big price because of poor ownership.
Cocker spaniels can be prone to spaniel rage. They will attack everyone with tremendous fury. Friend put his dog down because of it

They are all dogs and NONE of them are to be trusted, even my own.. Everyone's dog is the finest pet ever until it does something to make it the worst pet ever..

I am ok with toy-breeds (no bigger than a cat) everything else is a nuisance or a threat, like I wouldnt trust a leopard either, even on a leash

Larger ones should be guide dogs , sniffer at airports or police dogs.

There are plenty of "working breeds " out there for farm/ranch use and being a good buddy.

Those little dogs are often more psychotic than the larger breeds.

Well my Aussie, weighs in at 70# and is going strong towards "13" years old . . . I would say he is a medium size working dog, not an ankle biter.

1 - If a pint sized dog has an issue with a human, generally even a 100lb petite woman could kick it on the side of the dogs head to correct it. Not the case with larger dogs. I will agree that a smaller dog tends to go bonkers easily for some reason, but due to their size, they don't generally kill, thus they never make the news because they are handled at the home.

2 - Aussies and other medium sized dogs have been known to nip people for various reasons, but generally, a working "livestock" dog doesn't go nuts over one person (exception to the rule I understand).

3 - The issue with large guard dogs like Mastiff's IMO is they are very apt to view a human being as a threat, and those size dogs can cause some serious bodily injury. That IMO is the major difference between dogs bred to guard livestock and dogs bred to guard human beings.

If you absolutely need a dog for personal protection, I highly suggest to "man up" and learn how to use a gun properly (worst case for personal property, a security system).

Post 159 per this thread - "DogBites.org" is a political group which portrays itself as experts. They are about as unbiased as Fox News or the Huffington Post. Their goal is to ban pitbulls. As a previous poster already pointed out the dogs would just be called another breed.
What we should outlaw is people who think a dog has to be mean, no matter what the breed.

Point in case, the OP state that the dog that committed this attack was a "pit bull". What confirmation do we have of the actual breed other than what the OP is saying? So do we take it as a statistic without confimation of some sort of breed of dog? You would think that if a dog went into a house and attacked a little girl, it would make the news. So far, no news source provided.

As noted previously, some shelter workers don't even know what breeds their taking in...DNA studies reveal that shelter workers often mislabel dogs as ‘pit bulls’ >> College of Veterinary Medicine >> University of Florida

"Pit Bulls" are the in breed now, have been for some time (at least a decade or more I'd guess). More dogs with more stupid people, I expect the breed with stupid people to make more news. About as simple as I can make it.

I'm sorry, saying a pit bull is programed in the back of it's mind to attack people is no better to myself than saying Jewish people are bred to make money while black males are bred to walk around with boom boxes and have their shorts hanging higher than their pants.

I get the fact that some poeple will always believe that a bully breed should not be a family dog. Kind of felt the same way until I actually got to work with the dog. That said, some people through their own ignorance will always believe that guns should be outlawed because they are evil. For myself, ignorance is still ignorance.

My dog is a born, bred dog for a certain purpose, the rest "my buddy" comes as a plus . . . one must know the capabilities of your animal . . . one of my past dogs Rot/GSD, she was a lot more shall we say friendly than him but it's the nature of the beast.
