Need to slow down PTO rpm

how many of us old timers used a Buzz Saw on the front of a tractor, that is just as dangerous - u have a giant blade to get butchered with, not to mention large pulleys and a belt that will jump out and grab ahold of you at any moment and grind u up like wood pulp - i agree its dangerous but no more dangerous than yanking out stalks in a corn picker either

A buzz saw could be as safe as any other alternative for cutting wood. See the video I linked in post 23. Just because the old school ones have an unshielded flat belt at one end and a unshielded 30” blade at the other end doesn’t mean they all have to be that way.

A buzz saw could be as safe as any other alternative for cutting wood. See the video I linked in post 23. Just because the old school ones have an unshielded flat belt at one end and a unshielded 30” blade at the other end doesn’t mean they all have to be that way.

well of course we could all make a better mouse trap - add protection and anything used stupidly will get you into trouble - i took a chainsaw to my leg once upon a time and 100+ stitches later good as new !!!! so yea anything is dangerous some just more than others

Anything that cuts wood is inherently dangerous. Some things more than others.

Most people with common sense turn the picker off before trying to get the stalks out BUT that's why there are yellow safety stickers all over everything these days, common sense cant be bought or taught.

Years ago when I was in the volunteer FD near the house a guy got his leg hung a corn picker and had to have it amputated. Fast forward some years later he was round baling hay and somehow got off the tractor with the baler still running and the tractor started to roll, he went after it and his leg came off and he got caught in the baler. He didn't survive, I remember it like it was yesterday and it's been 20 years.

yea we have all made those little mistakes that cost us something in the course of life, when it hits close to home its even worse - we were at my father in laws over Cmas in SD some years ago - 20ish, neighbor lady called said her husband didnt come back from grinding corn this morning it was afternoon, asked if my FIL would go check on him since he knew where he wintered his cattle and fed them and she was in poor health and couldnt get out or not be able to help him.

Glad i didnt go along...........FIL went and found tractor still running grinding feed and what was left of neighbor was wrapped around pto/tongue of grinder.

sad anytime but with friends/neighbors/family you just dont forget that stuff

we can all speculate what happened but we had all done it to some degree - i still occassionally cut my finger with the pocket knife or stab myself prying with a screwdriver and knew it was going to happen

All because a chainsaw is just so inefficient. Not to mention noisy and a pain to oil and fuel.
