Why do people not want to work?

/ Why do people not want to work? #161
If people want their children to work. Make them pay for cell phones, going out etc instead of parents paying for everything, they need to learn the value of a dollar instead of being given everything, appreciating nothing and expecting everything for free.. The entitlement problem begins at home..

Truth.

Great insight. All our kids (5) left home and found their own way. Small bumps and a few short hurdles along the way but none of them have ever asked for much help. They all seem happy and well adjusted and none are on the dole. We are happy and proud.

I don't believe it. There has to be something that "the government" should do, preferably at a cost enough to significantly raise the national debt.

That's fine, as long as Kahlil doesn't complain because he's hungry. :)

Old Kahlil Gibran sounds like a homeless person to me. If he won't "Sell his days for gold", then how does he support himself. Day trading? I don't think so.

Got an email from a mother saying her son wanted summer work. (like he could not even post himself)
LOL, his rates were to be $25.00/hr to cut grass and weed the lawn etc.
Now I saw him 'on the job' with his earphones plugged in all the time, a disaster looking for a place to happen.
Shucks as a kid I shovelled a 300 ft drive with a wood shovel for a mere $1,00 and no tip either.
Talk about entitled.

Worse ...he was a artist/writer/poet and philosopher in the late-1800's/early-1900's ....so odds are probably good that whatever money he made was done by selling escapism, and as such likely never had to actually live in the real world on his own. Which is even more likely the case as he apparently acquired a "sugar momma" relatively early in life from what I'm finding and reading.

While I dislike individuals who live off the work of others without contributing to completion of any work, I absolutely despise those who advocate and glamorize that lifestyle.

Hunger and personal survival are great motivators, even more so than social pressure. Though when all three of those things have been removed it shouldn't be much of a wonder why some won't work. After all if their basic necessities are being met, and there's no effective social pressures that can be applied, then about the only motivator to do anything other than lay around (or cause trouble) is by having made the personal choice of wanting more for themselves than simple survival - or even just wanting to be/learn more.

To read Gibran's "The Prophet" is to recognize what religions try to teach us about Human capacity, without magic or the 'Doctrines of Man'. (got cultural overreach?)

In judging the man do we also judge his works? J Lennon 'slapped 'em around the bedroom.' Picasso 'ran loose' with the Ladies. Neither wore Camo. both are remembered, lauded anyway.

Are we still "judging others by their worst examples and ourselves by our best intentions"? (Wait, don't answer that. I'll guess.)

I don't really understand why anyone would want to work. Keep in mind I have been employed consistently since I was 16 and am now almost 40. Never been fired. Worked 60 hours a week and hated it. Worked 40 hours a week and hated it. Found out I could work 36 hours, three days a week so I went back to school simply to have more time off. Still hated it. Now I am able to work two days a week, 24 hours total and still can't wait until I can work 0 hours a week.

Some bird species puts her Eggs into the nest of another bird, so that bird will use it's energy and resources to further the genetics of the first.

Looking at it that way, morals aside, who is the smart one? If we allow others to live off our hard work, who is to blame? Not the people that simply partake of that.
