You're statement doesn't match the facts....

I think it does more than you want to admit. Those lines are coming closer together. The number of marriages and divorces are getting closer to being the same by your chart.

If the truth were known, all of us could be to blame in one form or another. Remarkable improvement can't be made overnight and v-e-r-y few of us have the patience and determination to accept small steps then wait for the the next.

As I pointed out before, people are less prone to get married now than they were in 1979. They just keep pumping out kids and expect us to support them.

There is a tire shop near my work I've been taking our vehicles to for a while for tire rotations, alignments, etc. It's nice because I can drop our vehicle off and walk to work. I try to do what I can myself but tire rotations are free so I let them do it. I bought a used truck a couple weeks ago and just took it there to have the tires rotated and the front end aligned. I saw a "now hiring" sign out, the guy inside said I can rotate your tires but I don't have anyone to do alignments right now. This is what we are headed for, physical work is going down hill fast.

There seem to be any number of tire places looking for experienced alignment techs. Given that modern vehicles hold their alignment much better than they did 25+ years ago, there are fewer places to get experience doing it. Remember when every corner gas station had an alignment rack? I can't remember the last time any vehicle I own needed an alignment, and that's living in northern New England where our roads can be pretty "rough", especially in frost-heave season.
Add to that the fact that modern vehicles don't lend themselves to owner repairs, there are fewer "shade tree" mechanics looking for a paying job in that field. Most dealerships require at least a tech school degree, and not everyone has the money/aptitude for that.

And therein lies the rub. Unlike when we boomers were young, there aren't many decent paying jobs that don't require some sort of post-high school education. You can't just walk in with no experience and learn on the job...employers expect you to be able to hit the ground running. And with various forms of government assistance being increasingly generous, who can blame the less-skilled younger workers for passing up menial jobs with equally menial paychecks?

I know we boomers like to look back on our younger days and reminisce how we'd walk 20 miles, uphill both ways thru blistering heat or freezing snow to get to our first job because we wanted to work, but I wonder how our (grand)parents' generation viewed us?

In my opinion there are few jobs harder than working in a tire shop. Worse is probably being out on the road. Our local shop had a husky girl working there at one time. I'm sure, if we wrestled, I'd loose. How does the song kind of go? "Man I'd like to find a girl like that". She might not even have to be rich.

And as long as we keep doing it so will they.

It should be a criminal offense not to support your kids. Oh, right it is. But the 'penalty' is to get more welfare benefits.

Bugs me to no end to spend 200 out of pocket to get my teeth cleaned knowing the Welfare people and all their kids get it FREE, and I pay for theirs too.

Governments have no mandate to take money from people that have it and give it to those that don't.

What bugged me was when I had to cancel a long overdue Colonoscomy because they wouldn't let me leave afterward in a taxi... yet if I had been low income the state would have provided me with a ride.

When I had a Biopsy done a while ago, I came to quickly, wanted my clothing as well as directions to the nearest Swiss Chalet. These precautions they take are ridiculous. I could have easily driven myself, instead had to tie up another person for the day!
