My Industrial Cabin Build

WoodChuck,

I just read your whole thread. You’re doing great. I had to smile again and again as I read about the delays and “opportunities” that pop up. It didn’t take me too long to realize the truth in the old saying “ it will take twice as long as you planned and cost twice as much”, especially when you build remote. My foundation also took 6 months, mainly because of rain delays and trouble accessing the site.
Hang in there, and enjoy the ride.

P.S. My build thread is “Arizona Ranch”

Thanks for the words of encouragement Bofuller. We are slowly making progress. Last night we put up our first wall. It seems silly, but it felt like a big deal. Yes it definitely takes longer than you think it will, and the delays are discouraging sometimes. managing your enthusiasm seems to be the biggest test. You have to rebuild after the loss of motivation and enthusiasm.

Last weekend we taped out some lines before our compressor problem.

My wife called Husky and Home Depot. She gave them purchase information and they gave us a gift certificate that will cover replacement of the compressor. I will probably go today and get a new one. I was surprised and pleased. I might even upgrade to one with a larger cast iron pump. Yesterday we used that old pancake compressor and put up our first wall.

I'm going back out there today, and my son in law volunteered to come next weekend and help out. He frames houses for a living. So I get to have a visit from my daughter and her family and I get professional help. I can't beat that offer anywhere.

Nice to see the walls starting to come together.

I've never used tape to mark out a wall before. A string chalk line gives a perfectly straight line and it's a lot faster and cheaper. I always start with the exterior walls and do 12 foot sections at a time. That way it's easy for me to stand them up by myself and lock them into position.

Yea, was going to suggest outside walls first. Tie in the inner walls using top plate..

Exterior walls are 6 inch SIPS and will arrive onsite ready to be installed and screwed to the interior walls and timbers.
I had the chalk string in the truck but my wife asked if we could use painters tape so she could “see” the lines of the house. She has poured over the building plans but can’t envision it when she stands on the slab. So I taped out the lines for her. As I move forward I am sure I will use chalk for some of it.

I've never done SIPS so I will be interested to hear how they go in.

When my clients ask me where the walls are going to go, I lay down 2x4' pretty close to where they are going and then mark on them where the windows are and maybe write on the slab with a pencil what each room is going to be.

Tape sounds like a great idea, I just never thought of it or seen it done.

My son in law came today and I basicly stood around and watched him work. He looked thru the plans when he got to my house and asked some questions. We got to the homesite and he asked some more questions, pointed out some things that I did "diffferent". We chalked the lines, and he started rolling. It was freaking fast. He also didn't use my miter saw, but cut all the studs by hand with the skill saw.
