.. I wonder if AR's are used to bear hunt...........

.450 Bushie, .458 SoCom. East of the Mississippi, any AR10 in .308 or see if Wyndham will fix you up with a .358 Win. (uh, hel-looo ..)

Now a .22WMR AR I might be interested in. ...

Not likely or not easy? .22WMR AR - Google Search

Me too... I like 22WMR, although it isn't cheap to shoot..

If AR is about 'round count', no caliber is cheap to shoot. (please don't suggest .. even mention S&W's plastic .22 LR AR) If it's about picking a hair and hunting with a 4-5 rd mag in a caliber other than 5.56/.223. 7.62 x 39, or .300, well there are the superb 6.5 Grendel and .300 Ham'r. That said:

Probably the next rifle I buy will be a .22WMR of some type. Nothing fun is cheap any more.

I have .22 Mag Heritage revo, Rem 597 semi-auto rifle, and CZ 452 LUX. When you see how nicely centered it's ballistics and cost are between .22 LR and .22 Hornet, you'll find a lot to like about whatever you shoot your ammo through. Some calibers are just too much fun.

btw, I've shot more 'coons, coyotes, red & gray fox, and feral cats with .22 Mag than with .22 H, .22 LR, and .17 HMR combined. No lost game (vs .22 LR & Hum'r) & all one-shot kills. "Some calibers are just too much fun." :p

It's been a while since I read it, but from what I recall .22 WMR isn't a cartridge that's easy to design a semi-automatic firearm around due to multiple factors (cartridge shape, consistency of ammunition performance across all loads/manufacturers).

So combine that with the lack (real or perceived) of market, and it sort of makes sense why there are so few manufacturers that make semi-auto firearms in .22 WMR.

Part of the reason I've been buying more bolt action (or even single shot rifles) lately is that if the cartridge isn't based on the .223 Rem/5.56 NATO, or the .308 Win/7.62 NATO rounds it's unlikely that a manufacturer would be making an AR variant capable of using it. The major exceptions to that being .22LR and 9x19mm which are really common rounds. So since I'd rather be spending money on ammunition than a variety of spare magazines.......

On that note even with some of the bolt-action rifles I've gone with ones that use magazines that are compatible with multiple firearms (e.g. a Mossberg MVP in .308 Win, Ruger Ranch in 7.62x39mm) .....and seriously considering adding either a Mossber MVP or Ruger American/Ranch in .223Rem/5.56NATO since they can use the same magazines as my AR-15's

I have an old Western auto bolt with a 24 inch barrel (Mossberg made it) and a CZ 512 in 22 mag, they both work perfectly. I have had a few semi 22 mags and the 512 works the best..

I purchased my first .223 instead of the 22WMR that I wanted, because the cost of the ammo, at the time, was identical,,
Even now, as compared to owning two rifles, simply owning the .223 is the cost effective thing to do.

and, if I remember correctly, someone figured out how to make a functional semi-auto with the .223 cartridge,,,

Thanks, that's good to know as I've been looking to expand into .22 WMR .....and was pretty sure .22 WMR can be made into a semi-auto (though few companies seem to try).

I think one of the things I read was why Ruger doesn't have a 10/22 in .22 MAG - don't remember who was writing it, or even where I saw it (or if I'm even remembering it correctly).

Yes, they have and I have several :D .... though it seems not many care to do the same in .22 MAG ...for whatever reason.

I had a Remington 597 22 mag, they stopped making them a couple of years ago, I had to replace the extractor, it just wouldn't work well without replacing it with a volquartsen extractor.. I sold it because it wasn't nearly as accurate as the other two I have..

Ruger made a 10-22 magnum from 1998 to 2006. It appears that they had ejector problems, but used rifles (when available) command a high price.

From this discussion on a gun forum;
Magnum Reserch
(sic)
builds a semi-auto 22mag based off the 10/22 magnum. They seem to pretty reliable but they built a special gas port/block under the barrel near the barrel tightening block
