Was I out of line?

You were out of line ONLY if the caller thought you were someone else. Give 'em a break, they are kids.

But SCHOOL them!

You said "hello" he said "hey", what is the difference?

In Europe, we learned to pick up the phone and say our name. Like "hello this is Bert Zegers" Just hello is considered rude. Now I live in Canada and people picking up the phone say "hello".

How am I supposed to know who I am talking to?

If I call someone and the person picking up the phone says "hello" I will say my name and I will ask "who am I talking to?"

The difference is they are the ones calling MY home.

Genearlly speaking, per my work/cell phone number, I ALWAYS give my first name and ask the person on the other line calling me how I can help them.

When calling MY home, YOU should know who you are calling IMO.

We've gone over this with our own boys. You call a home, you address the person as "Mr." (last name) if a man picks up the line and say "Miss" last name if a woman picks up the line, then give your name and let them know who you are calling for and ask if they are available. If you make a mistake, you error on the side of caution because your the one calling them.

I get the fact that when you're 14 and calling your buddies cell phone and he's the only picking up that you will basically say and do whatever you want, my only point is that when you're calling a home and you don't know who is going to answer, there should be some basic courtesy rules in place.

The one that gets me is:

(me) "Hello"

(them)....after a pause..."Who is this ?"

Torks me off......so I respond "Who were you hoping to get ?"....or "Well, WHO is this ?"

(them) "uh, I think I have the wrong number"

(me)...."Could be...OR maybe I just stopped in the middle of my burglary to answer the phone.....you want to speak to one of the folks I duct taped up ?"

What good is a phone if you can't have fun with it ? :D

I get spoof calls (making the incoming call look like it from a local number when it's from halfway across the country) from telemarketers on my cell a bunch of times. If I'm bored, that's where I have my fun. Wife gets upset at me, but had my boys laughing their heads off a couple of time.

I figure is someone can waste my time after working hours on the phone, I can waste their time.

I answer the phone with:

Myers Mortuary, you stab'em we slab'em, how may I help you?

I get a lot of hang up calls.

I've used

Joe's pool hall, 8 ball speaking, how may I help you?

St. Peters Cathedral, Father Joe speaking, how may I help you?

Joe's Mule barn, head *** speaking, how may I help you?

Joe's Taxidermy, you snuff them we'll stuff them...

Generally I know who is calling LOL Sometimes my wife doesn't appreciate my humor as well...

If I really want to throw someone off tangent, if they ask "can I ask you a question?" I inform them that no matter what they have heard, it's really not 12" long.

Very long time ago I had someone tell me that they would transfer me to Mr. Click. I was wondering to myself who in the heck is Mr. Click when they hung up the phone. Laughed pretty good over that one.

Thing is, generally speaking, when I'm calling someones home looking for someone, I tend to stay away from the humor on the intro.

I'm still shocked that a 14 year old actually called someone on a phone! I thought that was a lost art these days.

The kid had to call. Neighbors boy, wanted to see if he could go outside. My 14 year got his first phone for this past Christmas, but at this time he dosen't have it for a while as it's a part of his punishment for something that he knew he'd get into trouble for.

JMHO - I think a lot of folks don't even know what "etiquette" means. On the phone or otherwise.
