Water wells:

The farm was at one time 3 different farms.

The 43 acres with the barn once had a house next to the barn, but it was gone before my time. This farm had 2 dug wells. Our house water comes from one of these wells, that is covered with a well house. Water is collected from the barn roof and piped into the well. The well is 700 feet from the house, and had galvanized piping originally. After many leaks in the 70s, dad replaced the pipe with black poly. The well pump is above groung shallow well pump. In the winter we use a heat lamp to keep the pump from freezing.

Our house sits on a 74 acre section. This section has 2 drilled wells, that are not very deep. Our drinking water came from the well near the house. This well had a hand pump until the early 2000s when i replaced it with a submersible pump, piped to the cold side of the kitchen sink. The pump is seen here, with our new house bing built behind.

A 2nd drilled well sits behind the lower chicken house. This well has a water bailer on a rope. We would bring in drinking water in a bucket as needed.

The back 76 acres had the "old house", the remanent of an old log cabin. There is a dug well near it, covered with a concrete slab.

My Grandfathers farm, and dads farm is located in what is known as the 7 ranges, a land tract in eastern Ohio that was the first tract to be surveyed in what became the Public Land Survey System.

From wikipedia, "The United States claimed the region after the 1783 Treaty of Paris that ended the American Revolutionary War. In spite of the prohibition on settlement, a number of squatters moved into the land north of the Ohio River making settlements in Tiltonsville, Martins Ferry and other places, who were removed by force by the federal government. The Congress passed the Land Ordinance of 1785 as a formal means of surveying, selling, and settling the land and raising revenue. Land was to be systematically surveyed into square "townships", six miles (9.656 km) on a side created by lines running north-south intersected by east-west lines. Townships were to be arranged in north-south rows called ranges. These townships were sub-divided into thirty-six "sections" of one square mile (2.59 kmイ) or 640 acres. These ranges, townships, and sections were to be systematically numbered

The Marietta Land Office sold lands in the southern part."

My Great Great Great Grandfather Robert bought 3 pieces of land from the Marietta Land office in 1827, 1834 and 1837. His sons Edward and John bought land from the Marietta Land office in 1837 and 1838. I have copies of their Land Patents from the BLM web pages. Johns land bought in 1838, and more he possesed by 1853 became my GF farm. Other relatives still own parts of Roberts original land. My cousin owns my grandfathers farm. I have been trying to contact him to buy it, but I get no response.

Dads farm, was not from this land, but is nearby.

This gets confusing, Westside is the 42 acre Barn section, middle is 74 acre house section, the east side is the 76 acre "old house" section as it had an old log house at one time.

Dads Barn section was originally bought from the Govt in 1834 by Bethuel Rush. His house section was originally bought in 1832 by Alfred Cain. The old house section, I just learned was originally 2 sections, the North 40 where the old house sits, was bought in 1837 by Owen Dewees and the south 40 in 1833 by Danial Wilson. Because of earth curvature, not all sections are 1 sq mile. These half of a quarter sections are listed as 76 acres instead of 80 acres.

in 1853, Dads house and old house sections had 1 owner, Frederick Newkill (hard to read). Also, by 1853 the 2 acres had been sold off of a corner. This is from tax records.

The property below this is my GG GF Archibald McDonald's farm on my moms side, who came from Ireland in 1831.

in 1859, the map shows a different owner, but the record beside it (not shown here) shows Thomas Neukill as the owner.

In 1869, the farm is split again, with A Reisbeck owning the barn section and the house section, and Fred Snider (later spelled schneider) owned the old house section. The roads shown west of the farm, outlined in black, are no longer there.

The 1898 map shows the same owners, and the narrow guage RR west of the farm. My uncle archie went to school in school 14 on the map.

The next tax map i have shows dad as the owner.

My great GM sold the Mcdonald farm (EIEIO) in 1955. I had a chance to buy it several yrs ago, and now kick myself for not doing it.

couple mistakes in this post,

Was my GGG Grandfather Archibald McDonald who bought the farm next to what would be my dads property. I said GG GF. The picture of GG GF is correct, he was the son of Archibald Mcdonald, from Ireland. The Mcdonald farm was originally purchased from the US by Archibald Woods in 1819, and my GGG GF had it by 1853. This was sold in 1955, so was in family over 100 yrs.

I had the 1853 pic twice. I put in correct 1859 pic.

Notice in 1804, the land north of the 7 ranges is still Indian Land.
