I guess it scales differently because the bearing on the old shaft holds it up closer to the camera? Sure fooled me.

Yes, many digital cameras are notorious for getting a "fish eye" effect (distortion) with close-ups. That's why I asked... I've seen it before. Sometimes useful to include a ruler in pics.
earndale, I feel your pain... and you're braver than I! I had a bad weld on my 4WD shift fork, which broke off with only about 500 hrs on my GC2310. There was an obvious lack of heat penetration on it. (GRRRR!!)
I didn't dare tear the whole thing apart, even though the shift fork was in the tranny cover; the whole tractor had to be torn down and the tranny removed & rotated before removing the cover, to keep all the shafts & bearings in place -- which I'm sure you've discovered.
So it cost me about $1200 to replace a $35 part... Seems I saw that ball & spring in there, too -- it's used for detents on the 4WD shift lever, IIRC.

I think 2007 also.. was my brothers gave to my dad.. I am the mechanic..found that the hour meter is broke... says 480 hrs I write on filter date and hours … which was whe I changed hyd pump..spur gear... lol 2012

ok good news..all together all hyd. works good yes!!!! sad that one spline shaft runs all gears in trans housing.. poor design... but what can you do spend $15k 10 plus years ago..

So, aside from the fact that it's a lot of work to remove the rear end, how would you rate the degree of difficulty to do this replacement on the 10 scale?
Were there any specialty tools required to accomplish this?

Thanks. I am fairly sure this is in my future. And, though I have 40+ years in the auto repair business, It's mostly body repair.
I don't mind a challenge. And, I don't mind even going as far as doing a timing chain, heater core, or even pulling a complicated intake manifold on a late model engine. But, I have always drawn the line at engine, and transmission overhauls. So, I'm not too sure if I want to try and do this myself.
I also hate relying on anyone else to do something. :confused3:

I'm in the same boat as you, as far as experience; went through the service manual umpteen times, visualizing the process in my sleep.... but in the end I chickened out and had a local guy who works on tractors for a living do the job. He went through a fair bit of headaches, too, but he got it done.
Still aggravates me that it was a poor weld from the factory to begin with and cost that much to replace such a small part. I'm sure some of these pics will look familiar to earndale. Oh, yeah -- there's his ball bearing, #6 in the 3rd pic.
