Yup, the colder it gets, the longer you will need to hold them on.. Also, don't worry about wearing the plugs out from long cycles, I pulled mine after 4 years and they looked like new..

Good to know, Thanks.
I am used to my pickups, 12 valve Cummings and the other is a 2002 7.3.

Went 40 today and it started a bit easier. I don’t move my throttle at all until it starts then after a few seconds I bump it up a bit.

You probably won't need to open the throttle until it gets cold. Like below 32F.

Everyone should also remember diesels run cool at low at idle. You need to open the throttle to at least a fast idle.

I’ll pay more attention today when I move it but I think I am bumping it up around 1600 rpm after it starts but not sure I will need to look, I mostly just listen to how it is running, when it’s in my un heated garage i will have it plugged in and on a battery tender which will be nice and on -20* days I will even run my kerosene heater for a bit before I start it.

I would put the heater in the back, to warm up fluid in the rear axle more than anything else.

Sounds like a good idea being I will have the block heater plugged in, I was thinking of just letting it blow at a angle from front to back between the wheels but now I will just go from backend to front. Thanks.

Yesterday morning my temp her was 38°f so I hit the glow plugs for exactly 40 seconds. I turned it over and stopped and hit the glow plugs for 5 seconds more. It fired right up. Kind of reminds me of my old NH skid loaders.

I do have a block heater but didn't use it.

Does anyone know if the block heater is on when plugged in or is it similar to most modern trucks with a timer for 4hr?

At that temp it should fire right up, even with 20 or 30 seconds of glow time. With 40 seconds, it should not require a second try.

Perhaps you could try cracking open the throttle a little, and see if that makes the difference.

It's on when plugged in, no timer..
