I respect law enforcement officers and fear law enforcement officers. They are people like you and I, and although it may be hard to believe, I actually have some friends who are in law enforcement. You have good and bad people in ALL walks of life, and that includes jobs. The biggest difference is most other professions don't have the legal right to arrest you or shoot you by accident.

Per the Fort Worth shooting, I'm just wondering if it's been noted as to why they didn't have their lights on or announce their presence?

Part of the reason is because if the cop is found to have lied in court he loses his job and the ability to work in law enforcement. There are higher standards and more repercussions that come with being a sworn officer.

perhaps, but they don't try very hard to see if they are lying,or not. It's pretty much if the cop says it, it has to be true, and that is not the case with the average citizen.

It's as if cops never lie ! :laughing:

Wish I could find every cop here that has been fired and gone to prison when they were finally found out.
There have been many good citizens that have gone to jail / prison because of a cop's lies

I don't respect the man or the gun, I respect the fact that man wearing the badge and gun has earned a thankless job that also enables him to make my life living heck if I decide I want to be a prick to him.

I also don't fear the man wearing a badge because he has a gun, but I fear the authority given to that man by the government that automatically puts me at a disadvantage if it becomes "his word against my word" (one area where technology has made the playing field more "equal").

As noted, people are people good and bad no matter what profession they are in.

Being a cop is a thankless job and you can end up dealing with buttholes all day long, added the fact that some general public buttholes may want to literally shoot you.

Same "speech" I give my sons.

They have a thankless job because that's what they decided to do to make a living.. If they don't want the thankless job they should be doing something else.. It takes a special person to do that job right and there isn't many of them from what I have seen..

And that is EXACTLY why every LEO should be shown respect by the people they interact with.

Cops can be dicks, but so can the general public.

Don't get me wrong, I could of been a dick when I got pulled over for a seatbelt violation, but I was the nicest dick any LEO could meet.

I'm respectful to them until THEY aren't respectful to me .. Last time I had interaction with a LEO was about thirty years ago so I only see what they do from a distance...

Rural here but still on a main highway. We have a small detachment of Alaska State Troopers (1-4 men). Only one real Jerk in the past 56.5 years. Never been hassled or felt intimidated by them.

So when the the last time a LEO was disrespectful towards you?

I used to get nailed numerous times years ago for seat belt viloations. Never once has a cop been disrespectful to me.

If anything, can't say the same on my end. One time in Wilkesboro when I got pulled over by one local town cop for a seat belt violation, I ended up having 3 crusiers sitting behind me with their lights flashing (seriously, 2 crusiers came up within 5 minutes and parked behind the guy who pulled me over). I asked the guy if they all didn't have anything better to do at noon time, but I asked with a smile on my face and I was VERY respectful in my manner.

Heck, I once explained to a state trooper it was late at night on my way to a hotel, and to either write me up for something or let me go (he pulled me over for touching the yellow line at around 0100) because I was tired and I had a job to do early that day and I needed sleep (he thought I could of been drinking coming into a college town). He was fishing around looking in my car with his light. The trooper let me go, most likely because I was stone sober and I was respecful in my request.

Point being, even when I was young and dumb, never really met a butthole cop.

As I've gotten older, found out that doing unto others as you would have done unto yourself can go a long way.

The last time? A state trooper was flying up my road with no lights on at all, he ran over my neighbors Pug (that wasn't supposed to be loose). He got out of the car and said he looks fine, " and don't go racing to the vet" back in his car and left.. That guy is an idiot with a ego problem.. I'm not exactly sure what was wrong with the Pug but he did have an internal issue from it.. The cop somehow thinks he is a vet as well as a jerk... And they did race to the vet and I don't blame them..
