Everyones mileage will vary.

A guy who grew up in Houston's Fifth Ward and became a thug will certainly vary substantially from mine. I did grow up on the banks of the Houston Ship Channel in some rough areas but I didn't become a thug. Big difference.

Ya I try to stay out of the "thug" category myself...:D

I agree there is probably a better percentage of good ones than bad ones but I think you're good percentages are on the high side.. JMHO..

Right. WAY too high. 99% of cops are good, decent people? HA! That number is a bunch of carp!

I tried to get into it for years, have Sonny Barger tattooed on one bicep, and Ned Kelly on the other. I've tried everything to get jailed, but they just won't have me. (found out I taught Sunday School, etc)

Dare I suggest more like 75%, then? (as in 'the number of scientists who believe in God?' .. according to some Ivy League survey) IMO, we deserve that high of percent of decent neighbors. (I insist that Texan tbs' 95% 'Good Guys' number is conservative among TBN forum members, & that's YOU & me, right? :p)

I know a few LEOs that are ok. The 'worst' among them ('Gary H, report!') just play head games when you're 'legally under some influence'. If I drink with them, at their place, they'll take my keys .. so "I'm good."

btw, when LEOs invite me to a 'ride & camp-out' H.O.G. weekend with them .. I wonder if they just want a civilian to mess with. Experienced LEOs seem to recognize when I'm intimidated, and sometimes they'll really mess with me after a few shots. :( ..

So just because you are insecure around cops doesn't make them all bad.

?? As I read it, he said that 75% are good. Where do you get that he said they are all bad?

I have to agree that 95% is a bit high based on my experience in life.

I do know however that when one LEO makes a mistake and kills someone by accident, it gets a lot more "press" on an ongoing basis over what this LEO did...Police officer has surprising reaction to pulling over mom and her 3 kids: '''What if a car hit them?'''
I don't believe this is all that unusual. Just as with any segment of the population, there are good officers, there are bad officers, and there are those who will go out of their way. There was a state trooper up this way who used to take troubled teens out to a remote game warden's camp for a fishing weekend; in some cases it was probably the best experience of their lives.

Perhaps it's the cynic in me, or perhaps because of all the "youth protection" training I've had to take with scouts, but I really hope it was more than just the trooper and teen at the remote game warden's camp by themselves. This to protect the adult as much as the kid.

All those years when I was single, never understood why people would look at me funny when I told them I was going to some remote rivers in Canada, Idaho, Montana or West Virginia with other guys kayaking:laughing:

Actually,no. Most all departments have what is called a Brady List. A cop who's testimony has been deemed unreliable and who the prosecutor will not accept as a witness in court gets put on that list and it's disclosed to criminal defense attorneys upon request so they can prepare for a case. The officers are often protected by civil service laws and a misrepresentation in court (perjury in other words) may not always be enough to get them fired.

They can wind up in a dead end job where their testimony will not be needed in any prosecutions.

TBS
And I don't know of any department that maintaines sworn officers that are unable to provide reliable testimony, they may still work for a department but not in a sworn position.

An officer that can't testify in court is useless to a department and is just a liability.
